St. Philip Cemetery
(a/k/a Bighead;  a/k/a Brodhead)
50 West Crafton Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15205
(Allegheny County)

History:

Saint Philip's Roman Catholic Cemetery and Church are located on S. Crafton Avenue and Steuben street (Route 60) in Crafton, near a railroad underpass. The burying ground is located on a sloping hillside and is well-maintained. The earliest Catholic settlers in the area which is now Crafton, formerly St. Clair Township, met for services in the log house of James Flanegan near the site of the present church. Soon after 1824, they began to hold monthly masses, served by a missionary priest from St. Paul's Church, then on Grant Street in Pittsburgh.

By 20 August 1838, they were ready to purchase land for use as a burying ground, A deed recorded in Allegheny County shows that they bought from Philip Smith, "One acre and 95 perches of land for the use and benefit of the Roman Catholic congregation of Saint Clair Township and of the neighborhood, to be used, occupied, and enjoyed by them as a cemetery or burying ground, and also for the erection thereon of a church for the use and benefit of said Congregation and of the Roman Catholic religion forever." On 23 July 1839, a small brick church was dedicated on the site by Bishop Francis Patrick Kenrick of Philadelphia. The church has since disappeared and a large church now adjoins the burying ground. The earliest marked grave is dated 1841. The latest burial was approximately fifteen years ago.

This reading of the stones in St. Philip's Cemetery was done in 1989 by Eden Harriss and Nancy Long. At the time, there were some stones which were still standing but illegible and a few stones which had fallen over and were illegible and inaccessible. The graves and lots are not laid out in any discernible pattern and it is impossible to give their exact location.
