New grave markers for 30 Civil War veterans will be dedicated and a
symbolic deed signing for a 1790 log house
will be part of an event sponsored by the Elizabeth Township
Historical Society Saturday, May 28.
The deed signing will occur at 1 p.m. at the log house which the
historical society purchased in November. Fund-raising
is underway to restore the two-story home as a museum and develop
the site for educational and environmental programs and gardens.
Re-en-actors with the 105th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Co. E –
Youghiogheny Valley will gather prior to the deed signing
ceremony at 1235 Greenock Buena Vista Road. John McNulty who
traveled with the 2003 Lewis & Clark Expedition will perform
18th and 19th century music. Re-enactors at 1:30 p.m. will form a
color guard to lead a procession to the Old Greenock Cemetery.
The parade will include a glass enclosed horse-drawn hearse, owned
by Strifflers’ Funeral Home, hand-drawn hose reel firetruck
and antique cars.
The dedication ceremony for the grave markers will start at 2 p.m.
The patriotic program will include remarks by local officials,
music, roll call and singing. A commemorative booklet will feature
the Gettysburg address and give historical accounts of Decoration
Day, 21-gun salute and Civil War songs.
Short biographies of the soldiers, who served in the Grand Army of
the Republic and laid to rest there, will be read for this event
commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War from April12,
1861 to April 9, 1865. A search continues for the soldiers’
descendants
to participate in the program. Historical society members for two
years researched records, contacted the U. S. Department of
Veterans’
Affairs to secure the new gravestones and then dug the holes and
poured concrete to place the new granite stones.
The Elizabeth Township Historical Society organized in 1976 as a
501c3 non-profit organization. The society offers genealogical
services
and holds over 3,000 reference books at its museum located in the
Coates House at 5811 Smithfield Street, Boston Pa. 15136.
For information, call 412-754-2030.
The Greenock Log House is located at 1235 Greenock Buena Vista Road,
Elizabeth Township. (McKeesport, PA 15135)
I will be flying in that morning and attending the event!!!! (And

is no family there!!!)
