Col. John L. Loyd

Col. John L. Loyd, for over fifty years a
resident of the two boroughs died suddenly
Wednesday, at his late residence, 1403 Main
Street, aged 72 years.

Mr. Loyd was born on what is now Wood Street,
Pittsburg, in 1826.  In 1842 he came to Etna
where he worked in what was then Spang's mill.
Later he became connected with the Sharpsburg
and Etna bank which has since passed out of
existence.  After leaving the bank he was
engaged as book-keeper at the Isabella furnace,
a position he held until five years since, when
he resigned owing to feeble health.  Mr. Loyd
was well to do, leaving a considerable amount
of money.  He was a brother-in-law to Charles F.
Spang, Sr., of Spang, Chalfant & Co., and an
uncle to Councilman A. G. Loyd and Miss Sarah
Loyd, of the borough.

Mr. Loyd was a member of Etna Lodge, No. 453,
I.O.O.F; Union Castle No. 110, A.O.K.M.C. and
Guyasuta Lodge K. of P.  He leaves one brother,
Joseph C. Loyd, of Larnard, Kansas.

The funeral of Mr. Loyd took place this afternoon
at two o'clock.  Interment in the Spang lot in
Allegheny cemetery.
