Some History . . .

This Catholic cemetery in the Russellton area, appears to primarily serve a Polish/German community. It is said to have started in part, due to the Flu of 1918, due to the number of dead. The Baron family donated that piece of their farm for the cemetery.

The original record-keeper for the cemetery was a man named Danieli.  His home was located adjacent to the Transfiguration Church property on Poma Avenue.  After quite a few burials in the cemetery and some years after its inception, Mr. Danieli's house burned to the ground and all of the records were lost.  To this day there are concerns about whom might be buried where.

Two large homemade concrete crosses marking two different graves have deteriorated, and the engravings have been worn away by weather and time.

Gravesites along the upper fence were considered either "babies that were not baptised", "non-Catholic", or "unclaimed*".  (*Single men that arrived to work in the mines often would live with a family as a "boarder."  When a boarder died, the family he lived with had no means of contacting his family in Europe so he was buried along the fence.) There may also be others.  The graves were customarily marked with a simple home-made wooden cross which, of course, deteriorated over time leaving un-marked graves.

Many graves early on were hand dug, so placement was based in part on how many large rocks were encountered. Louie Baron, uncle of Ken Lewetag, was the first to dig graves with a backhoe and would often dig up a grave that was not where the marker was.

The large crucifix, which historically sat higher in the cemetery, had fallen and was removed to the side. In 2010 repairs were made and the crucifix once again sits in its original location.

We have no other historical information about this cemetery and would welcome any contributions that you may be able to supply.  Transfiguration Church has established it's own website and encourages viewers to read about it's current and past activities at: http://www.trc.catholicweb.com/

Contributor Historical Update:
I had to do some research for my mothers family Baron. In that research I had found a lack of records at Transfiguration due to the fire they had. I had told them if I did find info I would pass it on. Well I found the deed transferring the property from Superior mining to the church.

Transfer from Superior Fuel Company to The Diocese of Pittsburgh -- Date May 30th 1919

Now this is before some of the dates of burial. After talking to the current Priest and his conversations with others here is the conclusion.

Because this was property owned by the local Superior mine, and so many unmarked graves, we had concluded this started as a miners grave yard. It was then given to the Catholic Church. Also since many new to mining had a bad habit of dying in their first days in the mine, many names were not known or at best by nick names or first name. This then would lead to many un-marked names. Add to this the flu outbreak many family members would have been buried. This then became a challenge for the mine company.

Directions to Transfiguration: From old Route 28 North, at Acmetonia, turn at Clyde and Patty's Pub (traffic light) and follow the road out past Rural Ridge (Little Deer Creek Road). Continuing onward you come to a "Stop/Sound Horn" sign. Go through the tunnel and continue straight until you come to a "Graphics" store on your right. Take the "extension" to your right which goes toward Bakerstown Road. Before Bakerstown Road there is a "small" sign on the right side for Transfiguration RC Cemetery. Turn at that sign and follow the narrow driveway into the cemetery.
