There are multiple books that have been written about the early Cutler Family in New England. The only one that I could find that traces down and connects to this line of Cutler's is A Cutler Memorial and Genealogical History by Nahum Sawin Cutler, E. A. Hall & Co., 1889. It is available to read or download from Heritage Quest.

I won't try to duplicate the author's work here, instead I will just list the ancestors. If you are researching this line, try to read the book. Or, get details from my World Connect Database (link at bottom of this page). My research connected with the author's at (a) George F. Cutler (1818-1876). I have since done some research on George's father, so I will start my discussion with him--Thomas C. Cutler.

6th Generation

THOMAS C. CUTLER AND BETHINIA PREY
from NY to Fayette County, IA

While more research needs to be done on this family, here is what we know at present: Thomas C. Cutler was born in Dutchess Co., NY on 18 Nov. 1794. He married there before 1817 to Bethinia Prey, born ca. 1797, VT. Their first child, George F. was born in Dutchess County in 1817. They had four more children, John, Ann, William P., and Jane and remained in Dutchess County until sometime before 1840 when they moved to Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY where they are found in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Their son William P. was said to have served in the "late war" (assume Civil War) and never returned. (Most of this information from the book cited above.)

Thomas and Bethinia left Harmony shortly after 1860 probably with their son, John and his wife Lois (Rexford) Cutler. Lois was the daughter of Isaiah Rexford and Caroline Powers, originally of Bradford Co., PA. Isaiah came to Harmony in 1816 and died about 1848. (History of Chautauqua County, New York, Andrew W. Young, 1875. This book available in Heritage Quest.)

John and Lois's daughter Jennie was born in 1862 in Illinois, but, it seems they were never there long enough to show up in a census record. Later, in 1870, Thomas C., Bethinia, John and Lois are all found in Fayette Co., IA. Thomas died there about 1879. Bethinia is still shown living in Harlan, Fayette Co., IA in 1880 and 1885. She may have died shortly thereafter.

Per the History of Harlan Township & Maynard, Fayette Co., Iowa, 1878, John and Lois Cutler belonged to the Long Grove Grange. He was listed as Steward and Gate Keeper and she as Lecturer. They both probably died in Fayette County. John and Lois' daughter, Evaline Belle Cutler married Ledru Rollin Hunnewell in 1871. Their family subsequently moved to Orange County, CA (info from Susan L. Faria).

7th Generation

GEORGE F. CUTLER AND CHARLOTTE DUNCAN
from Chautauqua Co., NY to Vermilion Co., IL

George F. Cutler, b. 19 Jul 1817, married about 1840--unknown where, but indications are that his wife, Charlotte Duncan, born 15 Aug. 1817, NY, may have also been from the area of Dutchess County, NY. George and his wife were living in Clyme, Chautauqua Co., NY in 1850, so if they married in Dutchess County, they must have both migrated with his parents to Chautauqua County. Then, before 1860--a few years before his father left New York, George and family had moved on to Vermilion Co., Illinois. At some juncture, he may have gone to a form of medical school--or maybe not (it wasn't required), but he had been listed as a clerk in 1850, and now, in 1860, he is listed as a physician. In Illinois, they lived and owned property in Ridge Farm, Elwood Twp. Dr. Cutler also served as Postmaster in 1859 and was an original member of the Masons at Ridge Farm.

George and Charlotte had 4 children--all born in New York -- Martin P., John J., Mary Josephine, and Ruby Ann. Son John J. died at age 25. Daughter, Mary Josephine married Thomas Folger. Thomas Folger served in the civil war, 37th Ill. Vol. Inf., Co.K. In 1876, the Folgers moved to Jewell Co., KA; then in 1883, they moved to Jasper Co., MO. (See this Bio of Thomas Folger which also contains information about his wife's family.) Daughter Ruby Ann married Marcus Sutherlin and died three years later in 1874, leaving a young daughter, Buena Vista, who was in her grandmother's care in the 1880 census. Charlotte was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

George died 8 Dec. 1876 at the age of 59 in Ridge Farm. He is buried in Pilot Grove Cem. In his will, he directed that Marcus Sutherlin, father of Buna Vista Sutherlin, should have nothing from the estate. He also forgave a loan owed by his son, Martin, and made reference to a tract of land that he owned in California on which his son Martin was living.

After his death, Charlotte then went to live with her daughter, Josephine, in Jasper Co., MO. Her death record shows that she lived until Nov. 16, 1891, at age 74. She is buried in Fairview Cem., Jasper Co., MO.

8th Generation

MARTIN P. CUTLER AND LILLIAN ESTELLE GARDNER
from Vermilion Co., IL to Los Angeles, CA

Martin P. Cutler (b. Jan 1842, NY) enlisted at Rolla, MO, April 1862 in the Civil War, Co. H, 5th MO Rgmt; later serving as 1st Lieutenant and adjutant in the 13th Missouri Cavalry Vols. In his rather large military/pension files was found an
affidavit describing the treatment for eye disease of the right eye by his father (the physician). This occurred after his return home to Ridge Farm (Vermilion) IL. He also described having painful hemorrhoids from riding horses in the cavalry. About 1866, he moved to Missouri. He married Martha A. (Teague) Hunt in July 1866 in St. Louis, MO. She was previously married to Robert Hunt and had a child, Eugene Hunt. By 1877, they are in Florence (LA County) California.

In 1887, Martin filed for and received an annullment in Placer County, CA. In the Complaint, he said that Martha had never received a divorce from her first husband. Six days after his annullment was granted, on 30 Sept. 1887, he married Lillian Estelle Gardner. She was 16 years old; he was 45. Lilly, born 20 Nov. 1871, in Chetopa (LaBette) KS, was the daughter of Brayton D. Gardner and Adeline (Addie) Simpson McMurtry. They came to California from Wisconsin, via Texas (and obviously KS). Brayton was also a Civil War veteran. Read more about the Brayton Gardner family here.

Lilly and Martin had three children, Chester J. (1888-1960), Charles Russell (1891-1973), and Edith ("Tudy") Madeline (1893-1988). Chet was a mechanic and was the Police Chief in Perris (Riverside) CA for 40 years. He married Hazel I. Dunsmore and they had 2 children. He married 2nd to Louise Webb. Tudy married William Ball, postmaster, and lived in Perris. They had no children.

Lilly and Martin were divorced on 17 Feb. 1896. She cited non-support. She received custody of the two younger children. Young Chet was living with Martin in 1900 in LA. Martin received a land patent of 160 acres in LA county in Nov. 1896. Lilly married William T. Noonan, an engineer and prospector, shortly after the divorce on 30 Sept. 1897. Lilly & Wm. Noonan had 3 more children, Lillian Mary, Mildred A, and James William Noonan. All six children were raised by Wm. and Lilly Noonan.

Martin is shown as a farmer on the census record of 1880, but he was nominated as Public Administrator for Democratic County Convention, LA, Oct., 1884 (Sacramento Daily Record-Union, 10/3/1884); appointed 1890 by the Governor of California to the position of Notary Public, Perris, CA (Sacramento Daily Record-Union 5/24/1890) and served as vice-postmaster, LA County, resigning in 1898 (San Francisco Call, 3/19/1898).

Martin died 11 Jan 1903 in the Sawtelle Soldier's Home in Los Angeles of pulmonary tuberculosis. He is buried in Los Angeles National Cemetery.

William Noonan died 5 July 1932 in San Diego and is buried in Perris Valley Cemetery. Lilly died 18 May 1946 in Perris, CA. Per her death certificate, she was cremated and her remains are in Montecito Memorial Park in San Bernardino, CA, but there also is a headstone for her in Perris Valley Cemetery.

9th Generation

CHARLES RUSSELL CUTLER AND RUTH AMELIA BELYEA
of California and Arizona

Charles Russell Cutler was born 6 Mar. 1891 in Los Angeles. Growing up in Perris, he baled hay 12 hrs a day for 50 cents a day. It once took them 4 days by horse and wagon to go see the circus in Los Angeles. They moved to Pt. Loma (San Diego) for a time where he worked in Kelly's laundry. That's where he met his future wife.

On 6 Apr. 1917, he married Ruth Amelia Belyea--the day the US entered World War I. She was the daughter of Frank William and Carolyn Lavinia (Bishop) Belyea and was born 26 Jul 1897 in Boston. Her family had arrived in California about 1912 from Boston, Massachusetts. Both of her parents were born in Canada. Read more about the Frank Belyea family here.

Charley and Ruth started their own laundry. About 1925, they sold the business and went to Doris, CA in Northern California. By this time, they had 5 children. But they didn't stay long in the north--in 1928 they went south again, this time to Yuma, AZ where they opened another laundry. It was hard work and hard to support a family of 5 children. But, in later years, there was some time for other activities. In those days, Charley and Ruth liked to dance, and once they won a waltz contest. Charley also liked hunting, fishing and bowling. Sometime before the 2nd World War, Charley learned to golf and that became his passion. All of their children became avid and accomplished sportspersons.

Charley died 18 Dec. 1973 in Riverside, CA. Ruth spent the next 7 years traveling. She died 3 Apr. 1980 in Hawthorne, CA. They are both buried in the Perris Valley Cemetery (Riverside) CA.
