1st Generation
CALEB POLLECKFIELD LETTON/LITTON and GRACE BURTON
of MARYLAND
Caleb was a merchant, farmer, and constable in Devonshire England, 1678-1700. He was baptized on 24 Apr. 1678 in the Anglican Church at Ottery, St. Mary, Devon, England. After the death of his first wife, Dorothy (Teller) Letton, he came to Maryland (still Colonies then) as soldier in the British Army in 1700 and served until 1720. He married Grace Burton on 23 Mar. 1722. Grace was born 30 Apr. 1703.
For his service, he was given a warrant for 405 acres and obtained a patent in Rockville, Prince George's Co., MD (now Montgomery Co.). He had the land surveyed in 1722 and named it Oatry/Autre (after his place of birth in Ottary). Caleb began spelling his name "Litton" after his 2nd marriage. His will was probated 12 May 1763 in Frederick Co., MD. (Note: That area of Prince Georges Co. became Frederick Co. in 1748 and then Montgomery Co. in 1776).
Caleb and Grace had 9 children: Caleb II, John Richard, Sarah Ann, Elizabeth, Joanna Polleckfield, Samuel, James B., Michael Montgomery, and Grace. The Meadow Hall Elementary School web site has a picture and story about Caleb Litton.
Per his gravestone, Caleb died in 4 Aug 1763 in Rockville (Montgomery) MD; Grace died in 1791-1792, also in Rockville. They are buried in Twinville Cem., Rockville (Montgomery) MD. According to this memorial, there is an article about the cemetery in April, 1917 National Genealogical Society Quarterly. See a translation of his will on his findagrave.com memorial .
2nd Generation
JOHN RICHARD LITTON and SARAH JANE WILCOXEN
of PRINCE GEORGE CO., MD and VA
John was born 4 July 1726 in Prince George Co., MD. He moved to Botetourt Co., VA about 1740 and married there on 3 May 1745 to Sarah Jane Wilcoxen. She was born 29 Feb 1728 in Montgomery Co., MD. John served in the Rev. War. (as a lieutenant) as did all of his brothers.
John and Sarah are said to have had these children, Elizabeth, Brilliance/Bellicent, Emeline, James Edward, Solomon Caleb, Burton, Nancy, Hamilton, Thomas, and John--and perhaps others. John was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
He died 3 Jan 1804 and she died Jan 1808, both in Russell Co., VA. They are both buried in Solomon Litton Hollow Cem., Russell Co., VA.
3rd Generation
SOLOMON CALEB LITTON, SR. and MARTHA SHARP DUNCAN of VA
Soloman (Saul) was born 22 Dec 1751 in Botetourt Co., VA. He married 24 May 1774 in Russell Co., VA to Martha Sharp (Duncan) Hawthorne. Born 27 Sept. 1756, she was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Alexander) Duncan, Scotch-Irish, who emigrated to Lancaster Co., PA from Belfast, Ireland along with the Sharps, Laughlins, and Porterfields. They had moved early in life from the area of Argyle, Scotland to Ireland.
Saul served 13 Aug 1774 in Capt. Daniel Smith's Co., and was commissioned an Ensign of Militia, Washington Co., Feb 26 1777; he was promoted to 2nd Lt., served with Capt. John Duncans Company and Capt. Gilmore's Co., Botetourt Co., VA. He fought against the British and Indians, was captured at Martins' Station (near present Paris) KY and he and his wife and brother-in-law were taken to Fort Quebec, Canada. They were released in 1784. Here is one account (of many) on the internet about his captivity.
On April 11 1788, he bought 146 acres in the corner of Clinch River and Big Cedar Creek. Two hollows leading south from the Clinch River form what is known as Soloman Litton Hollow. Saul and Martha had these children: John Whitley, Thomas, Burton Caleb, Soloman Caleb, Elizabeth, Hiram Franklin, James Harvey, Mary A., Alexander Duncan, Caleb P., Virginia Lee,
Martha died 31 March 1821 in Russell Co.; he died 24 Feb. 1844. Both are buried in Solomon Litton Hollow Cemetery on his property.
4th Generation
HIRAM FRANKLIN LITTON and MARTHA ELIZABETH PATSY COX
from VA to KY
Hiram Litton was born 29 Mar. 1787 probably in Russell Co., VA. He married 13 Sept. 1812 in Knox Co., KY to Martha Elizabeth Patsy Cox, born 19 Jun 1797. She may be the daughter of Samuel and Martha Jane (Cox) Cox, as their son Thomas was living next to Samuel's family in 1850, Livingston Co., MO.
Hiram and Patsy had these children: Solomon, Emily, Thomas S., John S., and perhaps, Elijah, George Washington, Cynthia, Betsy, Alexander, Reuben. The Biography of his son Thomas states there were just 8 children in this family--more research is needed.
Patsy died 18 Sept. 1829 in Whitley Co., KY. Hiram married 2nd on 25 Jan 1837 in Laurel Co., KY to Cynthia Smith. They had two children, Isabella Angelina, and Hiram Green.
Hiram died 2 Oct 1852 in Whitley Co., KY. Cynthia died 10 Aug. 1886. Hiram and two wives are buried in Briarwood Cem., Williamsburg (Whitley) KY. Cynthias obituary as posted on her findagrave.com memorial reads:
August 13,-Died: At her residence 3 1/2 miles south of London on Tuesday the 10th inst., Mrs. Cynthia Litton in her 85th year, wife of Hiram Litton whose death preceded hers in 1852. Sister Litton was converted to Christ about 65 years ago under the preaching of James Barnes, father of the noted Geo. O. Barnes. She was a daughter of Jeremiah Smith one of the oldest settlers of this part of Kentucky. Her remains were interred at Old Union Church on the 11th".
This is interesting, as Thomas S. Litton, son of Hiram married 2nd to a daughter of a James Barnesone that is younger than the well-known preacher, but likely a descendant of his.
5th Generation
THOMAS S. LITTON and MARY ANN BROOKSHIRE (wife #1) and
SUSAN MARIAH BARNES (wife #2) of LIVINGSTON and DAVIESS CO., MO.
Thomas Litton was born 25 Mar. 1822, in Whitley Co., KY. He married 13 Aug. 1841 to Mary Ann Brookshire who was born 14 Feb. 1827. She died very young, on 18 Feb 1847 after bearing 3 children. This page from Marriage Records of Daviess County, Missouri, 1836-1855 shows that Thomas married again, in Daviess Co., MO, 11 Dec. 1847 (contrary to the apparent date given in the biography below), to Susan Mariah Barnes, daughter of James and Mary Barnes of Grayson Co., KY. Together they had 10 children. They lived near Lock Springs, MO which is on the border between Daviess Co. and Livingston Co. MO. This Biography appeared in the History of Livingston County, Missouri, 1886.
Thomas Litton
(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 6, Post-office, Lock Springs)
The biographies of men whose wealth or position has been inherited from generation to generation afford but little encouragement to the youth of the present day; but the life-work of men who have carved their way up from humble and almost obscure positions to places of substantial esteem, is sufficient to stimulate the energies of these same young men. Thomas Litton is perhaps not what the world would call wealthy, but he has gained for himself a comfortable competency and, better than all, the respect of a large circle of friends. He owns an estate of 300 acres, with complete and necessary improvements. Mr. Litton was born in Whitley county, Ky., March 25, 1822, the second son and fourth child of eight children born to Hiram and Elizabeth Litton, nee Cox, the former a native of Virginia and the latter a Kentuckian by birth. Hiram Litton continued to farm in Kentucky after his marriage up to the time of his death. Thomas' mother died when he was six years old. He grew up in Kentucky until the age of 15, then came to Cole County, Mo., and after living there two years removed to this county, where he has since made his home, occupied persistently in farming and merchandising. He now owns a dry goods store at Lock Springs, in Daviess county, besides having other property, elsewhere referred to. July 29, 1841, Mr. Litton was married to Miss Mary Ann Brookshire of this State who died February 18, 1847, leaving three children George W., Elizabeth, wife of Lorenzo D. Smith, and Mary Ann, who married Abraham McClure. October 7, 1868, Mr. L. was again married, Susan M. Barnes becoming his wife. Her birth occurred in Grayson county, Ky. They have seven children: Eliza, now Mrs. A. Moore; Alexander, John Speed, Cynthia, Frances, who married John Huston; Thomas and Sarah Ann. Besides these Emaline, Angeline, Hiram and Nancy C. are deceased.
Note that there are two punctuation errors in the above (see my underscores) -- I believe, the date of October 7, 1868 would likely be the date that daughter Mary Ann married Abraham McClurenot the date that Thomas Litton married again to Susan M. Barnes (the comma and the period should be reversed) and also there should be no comma between Cynthia and Frances as research has shown they are the same person. That would mean they had only 6 living children. Four more deceased makes 10 altogether.
Thomas Litton died 1 Apr. 1896 and is buried in the Lock Springs Cem. (Daviess) MO. Susan M. Litton died on 7 May, 1906. Both of the wives of Thomas Litton are buried in the Lock Springs Cemetery.
