Biography of WILLIAM DENNING

DENNING, William, a Representative from New York; born probably in St. John's, Newfoundland, in April 1740; moved to New York City in early youth and engaged in mercantile pursuits; member of the Committee of One Hundred in 1775; deputy to the New York Provincial congress 1775-1777; member of the convention of State representatives in 1776 and 1777; served in the State assembly 1784-1787 and in the State senate 1798-1808; member of the council of appointment in 1799; elected to the Eleventh Congress and served from March 4, 1809, until his resignation in 1810, never having qualified; died in New York City October 30, 1819; interment in St. Paul's Churchyard.

   1. Miller, Robert B., "Hawxhurst Family," The New York Genealogical and
       Biographical Record, 32 (1901): 172-176, 221-224; 33 (1902): 24-27.

   3. Ibid., p. 699. It's entirely possible that I misread Miller's
article, but I believe he felt that siblings Christopher and Mary
Hawxhurst were the children of Samson Hawkshurst [1571-1627].
