Biography of MARTIN VAN BUREN

 
MARTIN VAN BUREN, was born in Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York on 5 December 1782. He was educated in Kinderhook Academy and admitted to the New York Bar in 1803. On 21 February 1807 in the Haxton House, Catskill, New York, he married Hannah Hoes.
The professional career of Martin Van Buren:

     1807       Counsellor of the New York Supreme Court
     1808-1813  Surrogate of Columbia County, New York
     1812       Member of the New York Court for the Correction of Errors
     1813-1820  New York State Senator
     1815-1819  New York State Attorney General
     1821       New York State Constitutional Convention attendee
     1821-1828  United States Senator, where he was Chairman of the
		Judiciary Committee
     1829       from January to March of that year Governor of New York State
     1829       from March to May of that year he was United States Secretary
		of State
     1831       appointed United States Minister to Britain, but rejected by
		the Senate in 1832
     1833-1837  Vice President of the United States under Andrew Jackson
     1837-1841  8th President of the United States
		    Major Acts and Treaties during his administration:
		    Independent treasury act (1840)
     1840       Democratic Party presidential candidate (he lost to William
		Henry Harrison)
     1844       candidate for nomination as the Democratic presidential
		candidate
     1848       Barnburner's and Free Soil Party's presidential candidate
Martin Van Buren was the author of the following books:
     Inquiry into the Origin and Course of Political Parties in the United
     States (compiled from his memoirs by his sons), published in 1867.

     Autobiography, published in 1920.

Martin Van Buren died at Kinderhook on 24 July 1862.
