Dear Nancy,
I went through material I have at home for the Willoughby name. There is no
mention of the Willoughby family in the 1889 Portrait and Biographical Album
of Louisa County nor in the 1913 Springer History of Louisa County.
In the 1850 Federal Census of Louisa County we find in 52-52 Vinson
Willoughby, 28, farmer, born Ohio; Mary A., 36, born Ohio; William A., 3,
born Iowa; Thompson, 6/12, born Iowa.
In the Wapello Republican of February 10, 1898, is the obituary of Mary
Willoughby. She was born March 18, 1813 and died January 22, 1898, at the
home of her daughter, Mrs. A. Cole, in Nye, Oregon. Three sons also survive
her: T. L. Willoughby, of Pendleton, Oregon; O. T. Douglas, of Wooley,
Washington; Lou Douglas, of Harenburg ???.
The only Willoughbys in Louisa County cemeteries are all in the Thompson
Cemetery in Grandview Township, and are all of the Vinson Willoughby family.
They are:
1. Eliza J., died 20 October 1845, aged 1 year, child of Vinson Willoughby.
2. Frank A., died in infancy, son of Vinson.
3. George W., died 9 February 1859, age 2, son of V. Willoughby.
4. John V., died 9 November 1860, age 2 1/2, son of Vinson.
5. Vinson, born 16 April 1821, died 1 February 1880.
6. William A., died 1862, age 4 months 25 days, son of Vinson.
There are 3 Willoughby marriages shown in Louisa County marriage records
through 1899.
They are:
Thompson J. Willoughby to Nancy Jane Spitznogle on 30 December 1869, Book D,
page 159.
Vinson Willoughby, age 23, to Carrie Lea Shaw, age 18, on 1 May 1895. Book
G, page 276.
Jane Willoughby to Henry Long on 31 May 1881. Book E, page 339.
Bye for now.

(Inscription on the Vinson Willoughby headstone reads: "Here I lie resting with my dear little ones"). Mary Ann moved to Portland, OR shortly after Vincent/Vinson's death, which is why she does not show on the headstone. She died in 1898 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. Cole of Nye, OR. Vincent/Vinson appears in various records in Louisa County, IA, sometimes as Vincent and sometimes as Vinson.

Willoughby, Vincent
Dear Nancy,
I have done some more research at the courthouse. Your Willoughbys didn't
leave many tracks, but there is some information about them.
Probate Box 26 contains estate papers for Vinson/Vincent Willoughby. The
name is spelled both ways on papers in the box. The administrator of the
estate was a Balis W. Thompson. The two heirs mentioned were the widow, Mary
Ann Willoughby, of Toolesboro; and a son,T. L. Willoughby. The final report
was dated August 21, 1882. The widow, Mary Ann, as of July 15, 1882, was a
resident of Pendleton, Oregon. The grave marker was purchased from the
Sprague Marble Works and the inscription was to read: Vinson Willoughby,
Born Apr 16, 1821 Died Feb 1, 1880 Verse: Here I lie resting with my dear
little ones. Estate appraisers were George Moshier, George Mallory and
George Wesley, who listed and appraised the property on 10 April of1880.
There are a few land transactions, and I abstracted information from them,
which follows in each case the Book and Page numbers.
H- 494. John Hays sells for $90 to V. Willoughby 8 acres off the west end of
the NE1/4 SE1/4 Section 15, Township 73 North, Range 2 West on 4 February
1854.
14-4 Vinson Willoughby, of Louisa County, buys Lot 1, being the E1/2 NE1/4
Section 16, Township 73 North Range 2 west, 80 acres, from the State of Iowa
on May 1, 1856. (When the land in Iowa was surveyed and sold, section 16 in
each township was to be kept separate and sold to support education in
funding township schools, and this seems to be what Vinson did, buying some
of the school land.)
25-118 Vinson and Mary A. Willoughby sell for $600 to J. W. Shipman and
Oliver E. Shipman the W1/2 NE1/4 of Section 12, Township 73 North Range 3
West on 9 August 1873.
28-77 Vinson Willoughby and wife Mary Ann Willoughby sell for $120 to
Hannibal J. W. Parsons and Joseph J. Parsons 8 acres off the west end of
NE1/4 SE1/4 of Section 15, Township 73 North Range 2 West, on December 10,
1875.
37-134 For $1 and other valuable considerations Thompson L. Willoughby, of
the county of Umatilla and State of Oregon, quit claims to Mary Ann
Willloughby, now of Umatilla County, Oregon, to the E1/2 NE1/4 Section 16,
Township 73 North Range 2 West, in Louisa County, Iowa, on 18 June 1880.
40-8 Mary A. Willoughby, widow and heir of Vincent Willoughby, deceased, of
Umatilla County, State of Oregon, in consideration of the sum of $1600,
sells to John J. McChesney of Louisa County, remises, releases and
quitclaims all her right and title to the E1/2 NE1/4 Section 16, Township 73
North. Range 2 West, containing 80 acres more or less, on 15 November 1881.
Sheriff's Deed Book--Page 175 T. L. Willoughby had the sum of $600 levied
against him at the May, 1877 term of court by and for Nancy J. Willoughby.
His property was sold at auction by the Sheriff, the sale price being $250
for the E1/2 NE1/4 Section 16, Township73 North, Range 2 West. The paper was
filed 2 August 1882.
I've left the other messages as they were, so that everything will be on one
printout.
There are many Thompson surnames in the county, from several sources, that
cannot be related to each other. I will look for information, but that may
be a slower process. I will state that the administrator of the Vinson
Willoughby estate was Balis W. Thompson. There is a Portrait and
Biographical Album of Louisa County, 1889, with a Balis W. Thompson entry.
Balis was born in Ross County, Ohio, in 1836. His parents were John Thompson
and Mary Nicholas/Nichols; his mother died when he was 4 weeks old. The
father remarried in Ross County, and in 1839 emigrated to Iowa, coming
directly to Louisa County. Further information on him is given in the
article, but the Ross County origin should be of interest to you.
