Records show that William was a Scout in the Revolutionary War of Virginia and was also a ro ad surveyor in Halifax County, VA, in 1778 (per email communication with John Pearson).

Copy of William's will provided. William's will dated July 7, 1801. Probated February 27, 1 804.

William listed in the 1782 Halifax County, VA Heads of Household Census. William listed as H ead of Household, with # of whites 8, # of blacks 6. William had 100 acres of land.

William listed in the 1785 Halifax County, VA Heads of Household Census. William listed as H ead of Household, 7 white souls, 1 dwelling, 2 other buildings.

William listed in the Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in th e Year 1790 for Virginia. William listed as Name of Head of Family, with 8 whites, and 6 blacks. Also listed in Census is James Boyd, father of Jane and Elizabeth Boyd (future daughter-in-laws). Also listed Benjamin Faulkner and Jacob Faulkner, who witnessed William's will.

Halifax County, Virginia Deeds, Books 7-15 (1767 - 1793):
1. Book 7, pg. 79, December 21, 1769 from William Wade of Halifax to William Gresham of Hali fax, 50 pounds, about 400 acres, bounded by Fountain, Nash Glidwell, John Rogers, Brooks, Whittock. Signed - William Wade. Witnessed - R Williams, Edward Wade, R Mann. Recorded August 16, 1770.
2. Book 13, pg. 396, December 31, 1785 from Alexander Morrison of Halifax, to Thomas Howerto n of Halifax, for 245 pounds, a certain tract of land in Halifax containing, by survey, about 516 acres, and bounded by the lands of Benjamin Boxley, Moses Fontaine, William Gresham, Meshack Overby, and Jacob Faulkner. Signed - Alexander Morison. Witnessed - Johnson Faulkner, William Gresham, William Smith, Jacob Faulkner, Mesheck (X his mark) Overby. Recorded February 16, 1786.
3. Book 14, page 272, October 30, 1787 from Mesheck Overby (Overbey) and Mary, his wife, o f Halifax, to Jacob Faulkner of Halifax, for 100 pounds, about 200 acres in Halifax on the draughts of Hico (River?), and bounded by the lands of said Jacob Faulkner, Thomas Howerton, William Gresham, Nicholas Childers, Stephen Watson, Robert Childers, and Frances Faulkner. Signed - Meshack Overbey, Mary Overbey. Witness - George Isbell, James Howerton, Johnson Faulkner, Nimrod Overbey. Recorded June 23, 1788. Said Mary Overbey relinquished her right of dower.
4. Book 14, page 279, December 27, 1787 from Hilkiah Tally (Talley) of Halifax, to William G resham of Halifax, for 30 pounds, about 47 acres in Halifax, bounded by Standley, Hide, Obadiah Overbey, Patan Talley. Signed - Hilkiah (X his mark) Talley. Witnessed - Anthony Gresham, Nimrod Overbey, John Williams, Robert Childers, Natha Childers. Recorded June 23, 1788.
5. Book 15, page 38. I, Benjamin Boxley of Halifax, for 1564 pounds to me in hand paid by W illiam Gresham or secured by sufficient bonds, sell to said Gresham, the following Negroes (viz) Cain, Carter, Sam, Randolph, Sawney, Will, Ned, Jesse, Dennis, Milam, Charles, Nan, Betty, Patty, Sam, Jenny, Judah, Jenny, Black Francis, Hannah, Kate, Nan, Agg, Hannah. Also 1 black horse, 1 bay horse, 1 black mare, 1 dark bay mare and colt, 1 black mare, 1 gray horse, 1 bay mare and colt, 1 black mare, 1 sorrel mare, 1 gray mare and colt, 40 cattle, 30 sheep, 50 hogs, and all my household and kitchen furniture, including 6 feather beds and furniture, 3 trunks, 3 tables, 10 charis, 1 desk, 2 chisels, 5 spinning wheels, 5 iron pots, 5 dishes, 10 plates, 4 basins, 3 sets of cups and saucers. 6. Book 15, page 250, February 24, 1792 from Thomas Howerton and Frances, his wife, of Halif ax, to William Gresham of Halifax, for 80 pounds, a certain tract of land in Halifax, being part of a larger tract purchased by said Thomas Howerton of Alexander Morrison, and bounded by Jacob Faulkner, Benjamin Barby, said William Gresham, containing by a late survey, about 216 acres. Signed - Thomas Howerton, Francis Howerton. Witnessed - none. Recorded February 27, 1792. (Copy provided.)
