Notes for Charles Oliver CLEER

Notes of Goerge Boyd-a Cleer family cousin:

Charles O. Cleer
His only marriage was to Etta Jane (Jennie) Berqquist, the eldest daughter of Samuel August and Vernelia (Trotter) Berqquist. Jennie was a good wife, a prudent and wise mother, and most reliable housekeeper. She came from a race of people who know how to do a job that requires strength and endurance.

Her father, Samual Berqquist came over from Stockholm, Sweden when he was 4 years of age. As was frequently the case among that race of people, they adapted an American name, which in the case of Samual, who was the son of Samual, and the grandfather also being Samual, the father took the name of Samualson, the son-of-Samual, but in needing a war name, the father used the name of Berqquist, which was used in America as a family surname.

The boat trip to the USA required 6 weeks and when but a short ways off our coast, Samual's mother died, but the authorities held the body until the boat reached New York city, and she is buried there. Samual, with his father and two sisters came to Henry Co., IL, where the father established himself in a small business of his trade as a watch maker. However, after the Civil War, Samual located on a farm where the rest of his life he applied himself to that means of livelihood. His services in the rebellion were both courageous and faithful.
