Notes for John POPPINS

[O'Brien.FTW]
He migrated first to America, and then to Australia. According to Poppins records, his deat h certificate shows that he arrived in South Australia about 1854. In his youth he was appre nticed on 29th November, 1833 for a period of 7 years to George Morgan Goggin, Printer, of 1 5 George Street, Limerick,(now numbered as 38 O'Connell Street). On August 22, 1852, John Po ppins of Denmark Street, Limerick, was "admitted to the Freedom and Franchises of said City" . .John Poppins was the son of Francis Poppins and Eliza Evans. According to his great-niec e by marriage, Olivet Morrissey, "John Poppins was a warm-hearted Irishman, the son of an Ang lican clergyman. As a young man he was incensed with his father because of his co-operation w ith the landlord and the bailiff in oppressing the poor Irish tenants in his parish. After de nouncing his father as an exploiter of the poor, John left home for good and migrated first t o America and then to Australia." On his marriage certificate, John gave his father's occupat ion as doctor. An alternate version of the story has John's grandfather Francis as the clergy man, and John's father, another Francis, remonstrating with him.
