John also became a compositor. He was educated at Cambridge Street School, Collingwood, an d teh Model School (now Yarra Park SS) at teh corner of Hoddle Street and Wellington Parade , East Melbourne. As he used to say, he "was born in Oxford and educated at Cambridge" (stre ets, Collingwood). He referred at times to having worked at "The Age" and also with Green an d Fargher before he was appointed as manager of the Spectator Publishing Company.
