He served in the American Civil War in the Northern Army. He was a compositor with the "Ne w York Tribune". Joe Carroll, Michael's sister's son, had a picture of him in uniform.

Hello from Freeport, New York. In ancestry.com's database, there is a
Michael O'Brien who enlisted in the Union army 2 May 1861 in NYC, NY,
private, age 26, served NY, enlisted C Company, 17th Infantry Regiment NY,
mustered out at NYC, NY, on 2 June 1863 (sick at mustering out), transferred
on 1 July 1861 from Co. C to Co. E, source: NY report of the adjutant-general.
Can't be sure that this is your Michael, but the age is close enough. I
checked the pension index and couldn't find him (which means he or his
dependents did not apply for one, or he is just missing from the index).
