Her birth was registered under the surname "Morrissy". She was also known as Jean Betsy or B easie. On the death of her parents, Jane went to live in the household of her mother's siste r, Rosina Poppins where she was much loved. Her aunt and uncle died when Jane was seventeen , and together with her brother James, she assumed the care of her four young cousins.
