Trigg County Biographies

William Cameron

William Cameron was one of four brothers, John, Ewen, and Donald, who came to America from the Highlands of Scotland in 1745 and settled temporarily near the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. The Cameron's were migratory people and moved about extensively. After the Revolutionary War, William moved his family of five boys and five girls to a small farm near Abbeville, South Carolina. It is believed he was an Episcopalian preacher and was killed during a circuit ride in his buggy.

His son, William Jr. married Nancy (?) (1780-1862) from Abbeville and migrated by way of North Carolina spending several years in Tennessee before settling in Christian County near Rocky Ridge ca1805, now Trigg County. Issue: Daniel (1800-1877), Mary, John, Jesse, Nacy and Margaret. After William Jr. died in 1811, Nancy married William Randolph.

Daniel married Mary Fountain (Fontaine) descendant of the Huguenots of France. Issue: Icy, Jane, Nancy, William F. (1825-1904), Jesse Moore (1825-1899), Margarette (1831-1909), Mary Daniel (1833-1917), and Sarah Catherine (1835-1920). Daniel and Mary continued to live at the old homestead and were among the charter members who organized the first Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Daniel and his son, William F., were active members of the Wallonia (Mary Tyler) Masonic Lodge and Daniel served as sheriff of Wallonia during 1859.

After Mary died, Daniel married Martha Wade and a son was born who lived 21 days and a daughter who lived two years. Daniel, his father, mother both wives and the two babies are buried in the Wade Cemetery on the Clarence Broadbent farm. Margarette and Catherine inherited the family homestead.

November 1, 1848, Jesse Moore Cameron married Nancy Jane Boyd (1831-1910), whose ancestors were from Halifax, VA. Issue: Susan (1849-1877), Mary (1851-1924), Eliza (1854-1934), Irenee (1856-1921), William (1858-1940), Frances Marion (1861-1933), Jesse Lee (1864-1944), and Nancy (1873-1940).

1883, William, affectionately known as Uncle Billy, moved his bride into the home with Margarette and Catherine at the homestead to tend the family farm. Uncle Billy was superintendent of Mt. Zion Sunday School for 35 years.

February 8, 1892, Jesse Lee Cameron married Julia Ann Brandon (1873-1917), daughter of Smith Lee and Elizabeth Wade Branton. Julia Ann was orphaned at an early age and moved among relatives until her marriage. Jesse Lee purchased 185 acres for $600.00 from Sally Burton on the Blue Springs Road three miles from Wallonia and six children were born: Charles (1892-1982), Nettie (1894-1963), Ida (1895-1964), Thomas Jefferson (1897-1978), Bettie Lee (1899-1974), and Gordan (1902). In 1904, Jesse Lee sold his farm and moved to Oriole, FL, where son Walter (1905) was born. They moved back to Trigg County after one year. Son Jesse (1907) was born while living on the Clarence Broadbent farm. In 1909, Jesse Lee moved to the old homestead to sharecrop with Uncle Billy. Here Ruby (1910), Florence (1912), and Clinton (1914) were born. After the death of Julia Ann, Jesse Lee married Ada Hawkins.

Most of the eleven children married and raised their families in Trigg County. They were members of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Jesse Lee and many of his family members are buried in the church cemetery.
