Message: Biographical Record and Portrait Album of Tippecanoe County, Indiana, 1888, pp. 477-478

E.R. KENNY, proprietor of High Point Farm, section 15, Wea Township, is one of the prominent and enterprising agriculturists of Tippecanoe County. He is a native of Butler County, Ohio, born October 26, 1821, a son of JONATHAN W. and EDITH (RICHMAN) KENNY, both of whom were natives of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1839 they immigrated to this county, and purchased the land now occupied by the subject of this sketch, where they made their home until their death, the father dying in August, 1844. The mother survived her husband until September, 1876, dying in her eighty-sixth year.

E.R. KENNY, our subject, was reared to the vocation of a farmer, and received his early education in the district schools of his native county, completing it at the Lafayette, Indiana, High School. In 1851 he married MISS ANN ELIZABETH LUDWICK, a daughter of JOHN and EVELINE (KELLY) LUDWICK, who were natives of Hampshire County, Virginia. Her parents were among the early settlers of this county, coming here in 1835, residing here until 1860, when they removed to Champaign County, Illinois.

MR. and MRS. KENNY are the parents of four children, named HORACE GREELY, PIERRE IRVIN, WILLIAM BARR and MARY E. In 1850 MR. KENNY was elected township trustee, being the first elected after the change in the law providing one trustee for each township. This position he filled for one term, discharging the duties of this office in a manner creditable to himself and to the entire satisfaction of his constituents. For a number of years preceding 1859 he held the office of township treasurer, and during the late civil war he was treasurer of the township war fund. This fund, which was raised by subscription, was used for the purpose of hiring substitutes to fill up the township quota, and in this position he frequently had thousands of dollars in his possession at a time. He was also for a number of years treasurer of the Central Gravel Road Company, and afterward was elected president of the company, which position he held until the company sold out to the county. So fully did he enjoy the confidence of the community, that during the years he acted as treasurer he was never asked to give security for the large sums of money he handled in the discharge of his duties.

For several years MR. KENNY has been engaged in the raising of thoroughbred registered short-horn cattle, and is the owner of one of the largest and best selected herds of his variety in the county. In politics he was in early life a Democrat, casting his first presidential vote for James K. Polk. He left the Democratic party about the time of the Missouri Compromise, since which time he has been an ardent supporter of the Republican party. In his religious training he was reared a Methodist, and has always adhered to and assisted in the support of that denomination, although not a member of it. He takes an active interest in the welfare of his township and county, and is numbered among the public-spirited men of the community in which he has made his home for so many years.
