Death Notice of Thomas Kelly, brother of Kate Kelly Driscoll

Written by Kate Kelly Driscoll

Placentia, NFL, Aug. 13

The sudden death of Thomas Kelly on Wednesday, ninth of August, has removed
from the South East, a man who lived a truly Christian life, one who was noted
for his integrity. In the middle of life, Mr. Kelly lost his wife, and thus
was obliged to take full responsibility for the upbringing of a large family,
seven sons and two daughters; one a mere infant. To this heavy task, he
applied himself with that patience and thoroughness which was characteristic of
him; and his chief desire was ever his childrens welfare.

The deceased was not of late years, a strong man and suffered more less from a
constitutional malady; nevertheless, such was his courage and energy that he
carried on to the last minute of his life.

On Wednesday morning, just after sunrise, Mr. Kelly accompanied by his young
son set out to row Placentia. The boy had rowed but a short distance when his
father leaning heavily against the side of the boat, said in a weak voice Row
to land, but alas, in a few short moments before reaching the shore, t
frightened lad realized that his father was dead. Kind neighbors gathered
around and did all that was possible for the bereaved family whose loss is
great, and the circumstances are rendered more pathetic because this good man
has passed without a word of farewell to the family who are now doubly orphaned.

The late Mr. Kelly was held in high esteem all over the district in which he
lived during his life.

The funeral was largely attended although the burial ground is more than five
miles from the South East.

The service was conducted by parish priest, Rev. Father OFlaherty.
