'Orthes'

Feb. 16 - Circe, brigantine, 145 tons, Joss, from Bluff.
Feb. 16 - Hinemoa, Government Steamship, Fairchild, from Wellington, with "Frisco mail. Passengers - Miss Woodhouse, Messrs Allen (2), and Burton
Feb. 16 - Orthes, ship, 1206 tons, Peter Macfarlane, from London. She made a rapid passage of 80 days. N.Z. Shipping Company, agents. 28 passengers, four in the saloon, 17 second cabin, and 7 steerage. The Orthes left London on Nov. 20, landed the pilot off the Start Point on Nov. 23. One of the second cabin passengers, Mrs E.M. Nichols, died on Nov. 26, three days after leaving the Start. She suffered a good deal of sea sickness, and her husband who was on board informed Captain Macfarlane that she had suffered considerably from heart disease. The Orthes brings a very large cargo, over 2200 tons. The Orthes is furnished with a pyroletor, a patent force pump for use as a fire engine, with throws a stream of water impregnated with carbonic acid gas into the hold, or wherever a fire may by have broken out. The pump may also be used as an ordinary washdeck pump.

A ship was signalled early yesterday. She had the N.Z.S. Company's house flag hoisted at the flagstaff. The numbers denoted the Orthes and shortly after 10 o'clock that vessel entered the Heads in tow of the p.s. Lyttelton, and anchored at Diamond Harbour. The Orthes is a handsome iron ship, of 1206 tons register, built by Messrs J. and G. Thompson, of Clyde Bank, Dumbartonshire, and owned by Messrs J. Harding and Co., Glasgow. She was launched in 1877, and is now on her second voyage, the first having been made to India.

The Union Steamship Company are getting over from Sydney a new steamer named the Zamboanza. She is a fine steamer of 651 tons registered, built in Sutherland in 1874. She is started to have first-rate accommodation for passengers, and comes under the command of Capt. Lopez. It is intended to keep the Zamboanza in the Sydney trade.
