LIST GUIDELINES
THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES SHOULD BE FOLLOWED BY ALL
MEMBERS OF THE LIST:
-
OBSERVE: Observe the list for a few days before posting
any messages. New members usually have no idea what has been discussed
before and are likely to ask the same questions that have already been
answered ad infinitum.
-
PATIENCE: Although list members are always willing
to share and often mentor new members, they are not much amused when new
members post queries as if speaking to the Shell Answerman.....It takes
work and study to make progress with Family History, so remember there
are few instant answers, and often answers come in the form of more questions!
Patience!
-
PERSONAL MESSAGES: Keep personal correspondence between
members off the list. Comments that are of no interest to the entire
list should not be posted. Please don't send messages like, "Thanks for
the lead" or similar messages. Send those kinds of messages directly
to the person who should hear it.
-
EDIT REPLIES: When replying to
other posts, please do not copy the entire message. Use the edit functions
of your email program to delete the majority of the post. Usually,
only the header is necessary to show that you are responding to a particular
post. Copying the entire message back to the list is considered very
poor internet etiquette.
-
SUBJECT LINES: Please do not automatically hit the
"Reply To" button when posting. Consider whether your posting is appropriate
to the subject line (thread) you are viewing. If not, or if it begins a
digression, take a moment to modify the subject description so others will
have some notion of what it is about. If you do not, many listers will
simply delete your posting and your results will be diminished.
-
VIRUS WARNINGS: With regard to e-mail viruses please
send any concerns to the List Administrator, Maureen Donwen [email protected]
don't send virus warnings to the list.
-
ETIQUETTE: Finally, a short word about etiquette in
the New Zealand Fencible List. Please do not involve yourself in
spamming, chain letters, or flaming from this list. Everybody has
the right to be treated with with tolerance and respect. If
you have comments that are inappropriate to this list, send them directly
to the person involved. DO NOT send everything through the list.
Should you receive such a message through the list, please just ignore
it. Remember that the list owner has also received the same message
through the list and will handle it for you.
