Obituary Lookup Volunteers - Rootsweb List

Obituary Lookup Volunteers

Welcome to Obituary Lookup Volunteers, an all-volunteer web site and mailing list dedicated to providing obituary lookups all over the world.  Volunteers from many locations are listed on our web pages.  If there is no volunteer for an area, requests can be sent to our mailing list.  Our web pages also contains links to newspapers, libraries, genealogical/historical societies, etc., where obituaries can be researched and/or requested.

How to Request an Obituary Lookup

Before requesting an obituary from a volunteer or the mailing list, please read Making a Request.  Check the List of Volunteers and if your location has a volunteer, for best results send your request directly to the volunteer rather than to the mailing list.  If there is no volunteer for your location, send your request to the Mailing List.  Because many people screen their e-mail, in your request's subject line include "OBIT REQUEST" followed by state and county (USA) or country (International).

Your lookup request will be handled by a volunteer who receives many requests.  For that reason we ask that you be reasonable about the number of requests that you submit at any one time.

If you are a beginner at genealogy or obituary research, Beginner Information and General Obit Info can help you get started.  Additional information available for researchers at all levels includes FAQs and Problems, Searching the Web, Other Obituary Links, Genealogy Links, and USA County Lookup.  Each state and country web page contains links for local resources.

Volunteering & Posting/Publishing Obituaries

As we are an all-volunteer organization, please consider reciprocating and becoming a volunteer in your area.  You can tailor your volunteer listing to fit the time you have available.  There is more information about volunteering in Becoming a Volunteer.  By volunteering, you support a system that provides obituary lookups in distant locations for everyone, including yourself.

When you've received the obituary you requested, please post or publish it on the Web.  Other researchers will benefit from the work you've done, and having obituaries publicly available gives other researchers investigating the same family a way to contact you.
