Obituary Lookup Volunteers - Mailing List

OBIT-LOOKUPS-L
Mailing List

The OBIT-LOOKUPS-L mailing list complements the Obituary Lookup Volunteers state and country web pages.  The web pages contain the e-mail addresses of long-term volunteers, while the mailing list is made up of subscribers, some who request lookups and others who volunteer to do lookups for their locations as time permits.

The web pages and the mailing list are separate.  If you need a lookup and there is a volunteer listed on a web page, contact him/her directly via the e-mail link in the listing.  While some listed volunteers may also subscribe to the mailing list, it is not a requirement.

The mailing list is to be used for the following:

  • Submitting requests for areas that don't have a listed volunteer, i.e. there's no listing on the state or country web page
  • Sharing information about locating obituaries
  • Posting information about newspapers, libraries, genealogical/historical societies, and other obituary resources
  • Asking questions on the topic of obituaries
To reduce the volume of unnecessary messages, the mailing list should not be used for the following purposes:
  • Responding to lookup requests (respond directly to the requester)
  • Posting obituaries (see Posting Obituaries for alternatives)
  • Discussions not related to the topic of obituaries
  • Conversations between friends
  • Advertsing for paid researchers
  • The airing of grievances between members

To make the list work well for as many subscribers as possible by focusing on obituary requests and resources, subscribers who violate the above rules will be warned first and then unsubscribed if necessary.  If you have concerns or questions, please e-mail one of the list owners privately rather than send a message to the mailing list.

If you are unfamiliar with mailing lists in general or RootsWeb lists in particular, please see RootsWeb Mailing Lists for more information and a list of thousands of genealogy-related mailing lists.

You can subscribe to a mailing list in one of two ways.  Mail Mode means that each time someone sends a message to the list you will receive it as a separate e-mail message.  Subscribers to this list may receive 15 or more messages a day in mail mode.  In Digest Mode you still receive all of the posts to the list, but they are grouped in a single e-mail message that is sent once or twice a day.  There is an index at the beginning that shows you the subject lines of all of the messages included.

To subscribe to the OBIT-LOOKUPS mailing list, do the following:

  1. Click on one of the following: Subscribe in Mail Mode or Subscribe in Digest Mode
  2. In the resulting e-mail window, put just the word subscribe in both the subject line and the body of the message, nothing else, and send the message.

To unsubscribe from the OBIT-LOOKUPS mailing list, do the following:

  1. Click on one of the following: Unsubscribe from Mail Mode or Unsubscribe from Digest Mode
  2. In the resulting e-mail window, put just the word unsubscribe in both the subject line and the body of the message, nothing else, and send the message.

Please note that the subscribe and unsubscribe links are only to be used for subscribing and unsubscribing. Humans don't ever read the messages, only a computer.

To send a message to the OBIT-LOOKUPS mailing list, do the following:

  1. Before you send a request to the mailing list, please read Making a Request
  2. To send an email to everyone subscribed to the list, click on the following: Send a message to the mailing list
  3. If the message is a request, fill in the subject line with Obit Request/State-County: Example: Obit Request/MA-Suffolk.  (For non-US requests, use Obit Request/Country.)
