St. LUKES CHURCH, formerly
the German United Evangelical Church of Brighton
- 4216 Pearl Rd (W.
25th) at Memphis
founded 1853
Phone: (216) 351-4422
St Lukes was the second church
in the community of Old Brooklyn. The original movement to found
a church was begun by 40 German families in an old school house
at the corner of Broadview & Schaaf Roads. By 1853, the congregation
was too large to stay in the school house, so they purchased land
at the corner of Memphis and Pearl Roads, the site of an ancient
Indian Burial ground. The congregation was named the German United
Evangelical Church of Brighton. The current church wa built in
1903.
