Daniel married first Jessie Evelyn Montgomery on 29 February 1912 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. She was the daughter of Jefferson Davis Montgomery and Viola Katherine Lamas. The couple later divorced.

Living with them was Gay's father, John Watts, a 57-year-old widowed farmer. They lived on the Huntsville Road.⁷

Daniel married second Florence O. Hicks after 1921. Her parents were Isaac Uriah Wilkes and Mary Hicks. Her first husband was Houston Terrance Latham and she was the mother of four children.⁸ He was buried in Rehobeth Cemetery, Lawley, Bibb County, Alabama.

Daniel Gaylord WATTS died on 16 October 1969 in Bibb County, Alabama, at age 78.^8,4 He was buried in Rehobeth Cemetery, Bibb County, Alabama.
