     Joseph Tarpley BURT, son of James BURT and Rebecca BURT, was born on 29 December 1812 in Georgia. He was a planter.

He was probably one of the 3 males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, James BURT, in the 1820 Federal Census of Capt Thomas Bustins District, Putnam County, Georgia.

Joseph Tarpley BURT was named an heir in the will of James BURT dated 14 May 1829 in Putnam County, Georgia. "...also to my son Joseph T. Burt my negro woman Patty and her two children..."1

Richard M. BURT, Joseph Tarpley BURT and James C. BURT were part of a settlement by means of a public sheriff's sale of property on 1 January 1839 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia. "On the first Tuesday in February next, will be sold at the courthouse in the town of Eatonton, Putnam County, within the usual hours of sale, the following property: 400 acres of land, levied on as the property of Edmund Butts, to satisfy executions of fi fas in favor of Jesse King and Sampson W. Harris vs. James C.[G?] Burt, Edmund Butts, Richard M. Burt, J. F. Harwell and Joseph T. Burt; also 3 negroes, Shadrack, Jacob and Crecy, levied on as the property of Richard M. Burt, to satisfy executions of fi fas in favor of Joel Walker."2

Joseph Tarpley BURT sold a tract of land to James Creth BURT on 24 April 1849 in Mardisville, Talladega County, Alabama, for $750. Both men were residents of Talladega County. The sale included lots 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 38 and 39 in Mardisville (northeast quarter of section 18, township 19, range 5). The witnesses were John Sawyer, J. W. Hardie, and Marcus M. Duncan.3 He moved from Putnam County, Georgia to Creek Stand area, Macon County, Alabama, circa 1850. He developed a large plantation and moved to Auburn after the War Between the States. In the 1850 Talladega County Census he was living with the family of his cousin, James C. Burt, in Mardisville.

Joseph Tarpley BURT appeared on a census, enumerated 1 June 1850, in the household of James Creth BURT and Frances Anne GIBSON in Mardisville, Talladega County, Alabama. He was recorded as J. Tapley Burt, a farmer, age 34, born iin Georgia. He and James were cousins.4,5

Joseph married Amanda Arnold MARSHALL, daughter of William Blount MARSHALL and Martha D. TURNER, on 14 October 1851 in Talbot County, Georgia.6

Joseph Tarpley BURT and Amanda Arnold MARSHALL appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 1 June 1860 in Southern Division, Macon County, Alabama. The household was listed as Joseph T. Burt, 46; Amanda, 34; Wm. H., 14; Joseph S., 7; James M., 6; Thos. F., 3; and Mary R. Burt, 5/12. Joseph had real estate valued at $12,600.

Joseph, William and Richard M. BURT saw military service in 1863 in Macon County, Alabama, as privates in G. B. Slaughter's company of Macon County Reserves (Home Guard). In the company were R. [Richard M.] Burt, age 50; T. J. [Joseph Tarpley] Burt, age 52 and W. [William Y.] Burt, age 55. All three were brothers and sons of James and Rebecca Burt.7

Joseph Tarpley BURT and Amanda Arnold MARSHALL appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 20 August 1870 in Warrior Stand, Macon County, Alabama. The household was listed as J. T. Burt, 56, farmer; Amanda, 44, keeping house; Joseph S., 17, at school; Jas. M., 15, at school; and Sallie, 5.

Joseph Tarpley BURT and Amanda Arnold MARSHALL appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 1 June 1880 in Ridge Grove, Lee County, Alabama. The household was listed as Joseph T. Burt, 67, farmer; Amanda A., 54, wife; Joseph S., 27, son; James M., 26, son; Bedie E. Burt, 25, niece; Mattie J. Burt, 18, niece; and Sallie D. Burt, 15, daughter. The two nieces were Marish and Martha Jane, daughters of Joseph's brother, Robert M. Burt.

Joseph Tarpley BURT died on 6 June 1880 in Opelika, Lee County, Alabama, at age 67.8 He was buried in Warrior Stand Cemetery, Macon County, Alabama.

The three sisters were then living in Birmingham, England. Kecia's husband was Thomas Warwick, a jeweller in Talladega. They wee in the 1850 census. They had married in England and Keica's maiden name was Sherriff. She was born in 1810.
