John E. and Mary Magdelene Mercer Abney
     John Edwin ABNEY, son of John Beck ABNEY and Lucy Matilda Caroline Brown, was born on 30 November 1871 in Rock Branch, Newton County, Mississippi.

John married Mary Magdelene Mercer in 1901. She was the daughter of John and Susanna Lockhart Mercer.

John Edwin ABNEY and Mary Magdelene Mercer appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 18 April 1910 in Greenville, Hunt County, Texas. The household was listed as J. E. Abney, a 38-year-old teacher at Burleson College; Maggie M. Abney, his 32-year-old wife, a dormitory matron. They were both listed as married once, nine years earlier. Maggie was the mother of 3 children, all living. Living with them were their children Lucy Sue, 6; Mildred Lee, 3; and Mary Dee, 1 10/12, all born in Texas. Also in the household were John's niece, Lorene Abney, 15, born in Mississippi; Lucy Mercer, his sister-in-law, 23, born in Texas; and a boarder, Clara Nance Kelogg, a 21-year-old teacher at Burleson College, born in Missouri. They lived at 42 Lee Street.

John Edwin ABNEY graduated in 1918 at Baylor University in Texas . He earned a bachelor of arts degree. After college he taught school at San Marcos Academy, a private Methodist high school began in 1868.

John Edwin ABNEY died on 7 July 1949 in Temple, Bell County, Texas, at age 77. He was buried in San Marcos Cemetery, San Marcos, Hays County, Texas.
