Capt. Henry Clay Avent, 1820-1897
     Henry Clay AVENT, son of John Peter AVENT and Mary "Polly" BURT, was born on 19 May 1820 in Talbot County, Georgia.1

He was probably the male age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father, John Peter AVENT, in the 1830 Federal Census of Talbot County, Georgia.

Henry married Sarah Carpenter Spencer on 24 December 1841 in Choctaw County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of William B. Spencer and Sarah Lang.

The couple moved to Mississippi around 1841 settling near Old Cumberland in Webster County where they lived until they died. Henry Clay was a farmer, owning slaves, and was a pioneer school teacher, teaching 1845 in the first public school bulding in Webster County near Bellefontaine. Henry and Sarah Avent aka Avant obtained a land grant for 155 acres in 21 N Range 17 E in what was then Choctaw County. They are recorded in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Choctaw County census. The last census for Henry and Sarah Avent was in 1880 in Sumner County, Mississippi.2,3

Henry saw military service between 1861 and 1865 in Mississippi as captain of company B, 31st Mississippi Infantry, CSA.

Henry Clay AVENT died on 18 August 1897 in Bellefontaine, Webster County, Mississippi, at age 77.1 He was buried in Old Cumberland Cemetery, Dancy, Webster County, Miississippi.
