** Transcriber's Notes **
Please Note: At the left hand side of original document in same
column with name of street, the Enumerator made the following notation:
"This list includes the Jenkins School Franklin St." The "relation" entry
for persons #5-#77 had been given in the original document as "Studant"
but corrected for this transcription as "Student". All nativity columns
for each person listed above were filled in as "South Carolina" in original
document. Also worthy of mention is the fact that in the original document
persons above with birth months June-Dec, had one age entered initially then
crossed out and another age written in above it. If the date the census was
taken is correct (June 28th) there is a chance that at least some of the
ages recorded for those born in June are incorrect by one year. Finally,
there were a few similar surnames found spread out through the list above
and yet, based on Enumerator's handwriting, exact matches could not be made
(examples: #53 and #55; #26, #28, and #68).
Columns above represent name, relation, color, gender, birth month, birth
year, age, marital status, years married, number of children, number of
living children, occupation, months unemployed, months at school, can read,
can write, can speak English, home owned or rented, home or farm.
Columns omitted are birth place (all are South Carolina), father's birth
place (all are South Carolina), mother's birth place (all are South Carolina),
year of immigration, years in United States, naturalization, home owned free
or mortgaged, number of farm schedule (all these columns were left blank in
the original document.
Address of Orphanage: Franklin Street; house number not given in the census.
This census was taken June 28, 1900 by Jesse W. Hilton, Enumerator.
1 Spelling given above is same as that given in original document; can't
say if spelling of surname and name of school are both correct, as given,
or if one or the other is in error, i.e., Jankins/Jenkins, respectively.
3 Entry for age for this person in original document has 16 with a line
through it and 15 written in above it. Birth month and year as given
in original document are April, 1884, respectively.
8 First letter of surname might possibly be "Z"
13 Surname might be Marzyck, Margyck, Marzyek; hard to read.
14 Surname might be Seuth. First name might be Mable.
17 Might be McKursey; there is writing on the line to the left of "Kursey"
in the original document that looks like "Ml" and might be "Mc". It may
also be an attempt to cross out and start again; hard to read. Name
also might be Kiersey, Kinsey, Kursey (or McKiersey, McKinsey, McKursey).
First name looks like "Matte".
18 Surname might be Bill
19-20 Gender given in original document is hard to read due to overwriting
but looks like "F" for each. Given name for #20 looks like Buller,
Bullir, Bullis; might be Berlis, Berler...
22 Surname looks like "Fauler"/Fowler; might be Forder.
24 Might be Middleton (only one "d" given in original document)
25 Might be Dunham, Dernham
26 Might be Sumnar, Sumner
28 Might be Sumnars, Sumners
31 Given name, as written, in original document looks like "Oscoor"
33 Might be Heron, Heran, Haran
35 Surname looks like "Mayyck"; might be Marzyck, Mazyck, Magyck, or
something similar.
37 Might be Busard
38 Might be McGrie
39 Unable to read birth month; might be Oct but can't say for certain.
40 Looks like Blak in original document; could be correct or another
similar surname may have been intended such as Blake, Black, Blank,
etc.
43 Might be Murry
44 Surname is hard to read due to interference with it from the "y" in
line directly above (i.e., #43). Might be Manlie, Manlon, Maulie;
there does seem to be some over-tracing with the tail of the "y"
on the line above suggesting a tall letter in this area, i.e., Maullie,
Maulbe, Man?ke, etc.
46 Unable to read birth month or year, age; birth month might be Aug,
and birth year looks like it might be 1883 or 1885 but can't say
for certain with regard to either entry.
47 Surname is very hard to decipher. Depending on how one looks at this
name, one can arrive at the following: Marjory, Muzory, Magory, Maszory,
Mugrey, Magry, etc. The M is the only capital letter shown for this
name, however, the second and subsequent letters were written well above
the line of writing unlike remaining entries made by Enumerator through-
out the above census. As such, and it might be a long shot, this surname
might actually be something closer to: McGory, McGrey, McGry, etc.
50 Although it is spelled with one "d" in the original document, this
surname might be Middleton; also, might be Madleton. Birth month might
be Aug.
51 First name looks like "Fanie" or "Farne"
53 Surname might be Nasch, possibly Naseh
54 First name for this person is very hard to read; as written, the
name looks like "Iiear", "Iuar", "Juar" or "Jiear".
55 First letter(s) of surname is/are hard to decipher; looks like "Oh"
or "Or", but might be "N". Remaining letters of this surname look
like "..asch" or "..aseh". If the name does begin with "N", the "N"
is not formed in same manner as other (few) letters N made by the same
enumerator.
56 First name hard to read due to interference from the "y" on the line
directly above; might be Elvira/Elvera.
58 Surname might be "Margyck" or "Margyek"; hard to read. First name looks
like "Bruth" or "Burth"; might be Berth/Bertha
59 Surname is hard to read; looks like Hake except for the long straight
"tail" on the "k" - (i.e., the tail is not a loop but a straight line
and is very long, extending straight down all the way through the name
on the line below it and, in turn, entering the name space for person
#61). As such, the surname might be Hape, possibly Hafe...
60 First name hard to read; interference from tails of both "g" letters on
line above (#59) and name might begin with "G" or "C"; might be Goldie
but can't say for certain.
63 First name is hard to read.
64 Spelling given above as in original document
68 Surname is hard to read; looks like "Sumnore" or "Sumnors"
74 Might be Marsh, Mersh
76 Given name might be Renald or Ronald
77 Surname for this person might be Smalls, possibly Small; looks like
"Smath"/"Smith" except that the "t" is not crossed in the original
document.
