According toThe History of Clan Rose, The family name changed from the Roses of Geddes to the Roses of Kilravock when Hugh's son, also named Hugh, aquired the lands of Kilravock through his marriage to Mary de Bosco, daughter of Sir Andrew de Bosco.

From: A Genealogical Deduction of the Family of Rose of Kilravock, written in 1683-4 by Mr. Hew Rose.

"The surname is variouslie written. In the Originall of Kilravock, it is Hugoni de Rose." p. 10. "...The first of the familie in Kilravock, was named Hugo de Rose, married to Marie de Bosco, daughter to Sir Andrew de Bosco, knight...Sir Andrew de Bosco was married to Elizabeth Bisset, designed Ladie Kilravock, and daughter to a noble person, Sir John de Bisset, knight, which Elizabeth in her widowhood disponses the lands of Kilravock to her son in law Hugh Rose, and her daughter Marie his spouse, and their heirs." p. 27
