Ammirus Darrow was born on 20 March 1761 at Connecticut. Merton Krug, a descendant of Henry Ammiras Darrow, writes in his "History of Reedsburg" published in 1929 "Ammiras Darrow, the fourth generation, was born March 20, 1761."
In the Pension Abstract as found in the "Compendium of Early Mohawk Valley Families" it states: "Darrow, Ammirus, b. 3/20/1761."
1,2,3 He was the son of
Jedidiah Darrow and
Prudence Bailey.
Merton Krug wrote in his "History of Reedsburg ...." about Ammirus Darrow.
"While still very young this man went to New York, and is said to have taken part in the Boston Tea Party." (Memo by this researcher -- I assume Krug meant he took part in the Boston Tea Party and then went to New York.).
2 Ammirus Darrow began military service between 1776 and 1782 at Rochester, New York, USA,
Ammirus Darrow (1761 - 1824) served in the New York levies under the command of Colonels Morris Graham and Willitts. In the book, "New York in the Revolution as Colony and State" most of the line military units and state levies are listed. Ammirus is listed in two different regimental units. In one of them the regimental levie was commanded by Colonel Marinus Willett and I have determined the year to be 1782. Under the list of enlisted men he is indicated as "Ammirus Darrow". It also lists his brother, Jedidiah Darrow, and two first cousins, Daniel Darrow and George Darrow as being members of the regiment.
Ammirus is also listed on the regimental roster of the regiment commanded by Colonel Morris Graham. On this roster he is listed as Darrow, Ammerias. His first cousin, Daniel Darrow, is also a member of this organization. The date of service in this regiment may have been before or after his service with Colonel Willett.
Ammirus served in Col. Marinus Willett's Regt. of the N.Y. Line; he was on duty for nine months during the period in which Waiter Butler was killed at West Canada Creek.
H. Andrew Brown reports in his Darrow file under Ammirus (which he spells, "Amirius") that Sarah Melona his wife stated that: "He enlisted Rev. War at Spencertown, Columbia, NY.
Note by Dean Hagen
The term "levies" is a military term meaning "the compulsory enlistment of personnel as for military service."
4,5,6,7,8 Ammirus Darrow married
Sarah Melona Fisher on 6 January 1786 at New London, New London, Connecticutt, USA;
From Merton Krug's "History of Reedsburg", speaking of Ammirus:
"After serving throughout the Revolutionary War in the Continental Army, he returned top New London, T, where he married, Sarah Fisher, Jan 6, 1786.
Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files, Call # E, 255, W48,1990, v. 1, pt.2, A-E on page 880 states "sol. m. Sarah Melona on 6 Jan. 1786 at New London Ct., sol. D. 8 Mar. 1824."
9,2,10 Ammirus Darrow was living in 1789 at Canaan, Columbia, NY; According to the pension abstract, Sarah Fisher Darrow, his wife, stated that their second child, Prudence and third child, Jedidiah, were born in Canaan, NY.
11 The family of Ammirus and Sarah Darrow appear on the 1790 through 1820 census. As was usual for census forms Ammirus appears with many different names. It appears that neither of them could read or write so the census taker had to write the names as he heard them. I have tried to sort out the children since they appear on the census forms by age groups and not by name. I also attempted to find census years for the children as they left home and moved to other parts of the country. This specific information will be pointed out in the individual census year.
12 Ammirus Darrow and
Sarah Melona Fisher were living in 1790 at Stephentown, Albany, New York, USA; HEADS OF FAMILIES AT THE FIRST CENSUS OF THE UNITED STATES TAKEN IN THE YEAR 1790 NEW YORK
ALBANY COUNTY.
STEPHENTOWN TOWN
Name of head of family: Darrow, Emosas
I believe that the following is the 1790 census record for Ammirus and his family in New York. The name Emosas may be the translation used by the census taker of Ammirus. Although I can't exactly fit the children in correctly. We do know from the Pension Abstract that they were in Stephentown at this time. Also I have never had the occasion to see the name "Emosas" for any Darrow's. I may be wrong.
Free white males of 16 years and upward, including heads of families: 1
This would be Ammirus
Free white males under 16 years: 2
The first two male sons born in the family were Jedediah (1790) and Henry (1791). According to those birthdates, Henry would not have been born by 1790. There is an explanation. The 1790 census was very haphazard. For instance the census takers had to furnish their own paper, there were no set forms. The census may not have even been taken until 1791.
Free white females, including heads of families: 2
These would be Sarah b. about 1787 and Sarah age 26.
13 Ammirus Darrow and
Sarah Melona Fisher were living in 1791 at Stephentown, Columbia, NY; According to the pension abstract submitted by Sarah Fisher Darrow, his wife, their children, Henry Ammirus, Alexander and Sophia, were born in Stephentown, NY.
11 Ammirus Darrow was a shoemaker and tannery operator in 1795 at Leyden, Herkimer County, NY.
2,14 Ammirus Darrow and
Sarah Melona Fisher were living in 1795 at Leyden, Herkimer County, NY; Merton Krug's, "History of Reedsburg" states: "Ammiras Darrow and his wife lived for some in New London, but in 1795, they moved to Boonville, Oneida Co., NY, where he had a Tannery." (Note by Dean Hagen, Actually they moved to Canaan, Columbia, NY [1789],and then to Stephentown, Columbia, NY [1791] before they moved to Leyden, Herkimer,NY. They could not have moved to Boonville, Oneida, NY because Oneida did not become a county until 1798 when it was formed from Herkimer County, and Boonville did not become a township until 1805 when it was formed by a division of Leyden Township.)
In the obituary of Henry A. Darrow, who died in 1886, the following was found. It was published by the Reedsburg Free Press, Reedsburg, WI, Dec 9, 1886. Only that portion of the obituary that pertains to Henry Darrow's ancestory is shown here.
"His father, (speaking of Ammiras), was a Revolutionary soldier, and a shoemaker by trade. He removed to Boonville, N. Y. in 1795, when this place first began to be occupied and the early settlers underwent many hardships. There were eleven children in the family, eight boys and three girls. These early settlers were very poor, having but little money to pay the shoemaker, and that which they had was very much depreciated in value, requiring some seventeen dollars of this"Continental Currency" to pay for a meal of victuals. The style of living was quite different from the present. Instead of pantry and kitchen filled with all that is needful and convenient, the old Iron bake kettle, some wooden dishes, perhaps a few pewter plates, a goard instead of a tin dipper, a few knives and forks, manufactured by the blacksmith, constituted the outfit of the common people.
2,14 I do not have any official data to confirm that Ammirus Darrow is a son of Jedidiah Darrow b.1721 and Prudence Bailey b. 1 Mar 1751. I am using the comment below as circumstantial evidence that he is their son.
George Darrow, brother of Ammirus b. abt 1763, will was probated in Herkimer, NY, Estate No. 01834, on 22 Feb 1796. George had been late of Steubentown, Herkimer, NY. Amirus Darrow was listed as his executor, with Jedidiah Darrow, another brother b. 1761, in charge of the inventory.
15 As of 1800, Ammirus Darrow and
Sarah Melona Fisher lived at Boonville, Oneida, New York, USA;
The 1800 census list shows the name of the head of household as Amrons ? Darrow.
There are 3 males less than 10 years of age, this would be:
Henry age 9
Alexander age 7
John Baulding age 1
There was another son, George born in 1794 but died in 1798.
I have another son, Allen, supposedly born in 1797. I can find only one other researcher that includes him and he does not have any confirmation. I doubt his excistence.
There is one male listed for the age bracket 10 - 15. This would be Jedidiah age 10.
Ammirus, age 39, is listed in the 26 - 44 age bracket.
There are 3 female age bracket shown.
1 less than 10 -- This would be Sophia age 5.
2 10 - 15 -- Sarah, age 13 and Prudence, age 11
1 26 - 44 -- Sarah age 36.

We have a deed dated 1803 transferring property from Jedediah Darrow to
Ammiras Darrow. I can send you a copy if you'd like. The fee is $5.00 for
the search and $1.00 per page for the copies. The total would be $7.00.
That is only purchase I find for Ammiras. For wills, you would need to
contact Surrogate's Court. The address is listed below.
If there is anything else I can help with, please let me know.

Source 77 -- This a deed made by Jedidiah Darrow b. 1 Jan., 1761 to his brother Ammiras Darrow b. 20 Mar., 1762.
Know all men by these presents, that I, Jedidiah Darrow of the Town of Minden in the County of Montgomery in the State of New York for and in consideration of the sum of Two hundred dollars received to my full satisfaction of my brother Ammirus Darrow of the Town of Leyden and County of Oneida in the State of New York, have remised, released, and forever quit-claimed, and by these presents for myself my heirs, executors, administrators and assigns forever, justly and absolutely remise, release and forever quit-claim his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns forever all such right or title as I the said Jedidiah Darrow have or ought to have in and to a piece or parcel of land situated lying and being on the west side of Black River in the County of Oneida and State of New York, known and distinguished by No 41, according to a map of the same filed in the Clerk’s office of the County being a survey made by Benjamin Wright, in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety four, to have and to hold the above described premises unto him the said Ammirus Darrow, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, to the only use and behoof of the said Ammirus Darrow, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns forever, so that I the said Jedidiah Darrow nor any other person in my name and behalf shall and will hereafter claim or demand any right or title to the premises or any part thereof, but they and every of them shall by these presents be excluded and forever barred.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twentieth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred, Jedidiah Darrow Signed sealed and delivered in presence of William Truman, Elisha Grant State of New York, ss: On the Twentieth day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred & three, before me came Elisha Grant (who was made known to me to be the person by the oath of John Stormes, with whom I am well acquainted) and who being sworn said that he saw Jedidiah Darrow execute this deed, that he knew him to be the person described in the same. I allow the deed to be recorded.

Ammirus Darrow appeared on the census of 1814 at Oneida County, NY; The Oneida County Census of 1814 names "Owners of Land in Boonville in 1814". There are 118 names. DARROW, Ammirus is one of those names.18
As of 1820, Ammirus Darrow and Sarah Melona Fisher lived at Boonville, Oneida, New York, USA; The 1820 census lists the head of household name as what appears to be --Ambson Danow. In the surname it may be that the "n" is just 2 "r's" written together. For the given name I don't think that the census taker had heard the name Ammirus before. All names are in the census taker's handwriting.
The census shows 6 males in the following catagories.
10 and under 16 2
Benjamin Franklin and Joseph
16 and under 26 2
John Baulding and Silas
26 and under 45 1
I assume that this is Alexander.
Over 45 1
Ammirus 59
There are 3 females listed:
under 10 years 1
I do not know who this is but it may be a granddaughter.
16 and under 26 1
This would have to be Sophia
45 and upwards 1
Sarah age 56.19
Ammirus Darrow died on 8 August 1824 at Boonville, Oneida Co., NY, at age 63;
Krug writes ...."There, in the Black River Valley, he died, Aug 8, 1824. ...."
The Pension Abstract as submitted by Sarah Fisher Darrow states the date of death as being "d. 3/8/1824"

Molly -- I believe the obituary of Henry A. is wrong for the following reasons:
1. Merton Krug in his book writes on page 479, speaking of Ammirus -- "There in the Black River Valley he died, Aug 8,
1824." He goes on to say in the same paragraph that Henry A. left his father's farm in 1823.
2. On page 52 of my book there is a list of landowners in Boonville, Oneida, NY. Ammirus is listed. If Ammirus would have
died when Henry A. was 20, he would have died in 1811.
3. On page 62 of my book there is a pension abstract submitted by Sarah that lists his death as 3/8/1824.
4. Also on page 62 is the Dar application of Alma F. Steensen indicating the lifespan of Ammirus as being (1761-1824).
5. In Edward Everett Darrow's letter to Adelia he writes, "The following items about Joseph, born June 29th, 1803, came to
Wis. After the death of his father Amirus at Boonville, 1824 ....."
I believe Ammirus died in 1824 and the obituary of Henry A. is in error.11,20
Ammirus Darrow was buried after 8 August 1824 at Booneville, Oneida, New York, USA; I have found the additional information about Ammiras Darrow. I am a member of the Web page Ancestry.Com. One of their
databases is on Graves of Revolutionary Patriots that the DAR have searched for and found. Ammirus is in Volume 1. The 56
after NY indicates that the grave was found in 1956. How it was found and whether there was a marker is unknown to me.

From the book "Biographical Record of Columbia Sauk

Henry Ammiras Darrow(Jr.)
The paternal grandfather Ammiras Darrow, who was a soldier of the
Revolutionary war, made his early home in Connecticut, and when the father
of our subject was four years old removed, with his family, from Albany
county, New York, to Booneville, Oneida county, that state, where he built
and operated a tannery. This establishment was afterward burned down,
causing him a serious loss. He died in Booneville. He was of Scotch
descent, while his wife, Sarah Fisher, was of Irish extraction, her father
being a native of the Emerald Isle and pressed on board a British
Man-of-war, from which he escaped and came to America. She was born in New
London, Connecticut, and was nine years old when the place was burned by
General Arnold, whom she had known before he entered the army. She died in
Reedsburg, Wisconsin, at the advanced age of ninety-three years.23
This was sent to me over 2 years ago, I didn't think much of it at
the time, but came across it and thought it may give you some ideas so here
it is:
Ammiras Darrow: born March 20,1761, New London, Conn.
died Aug. 8,1824 Boonville, Oneida Co., N.Y.
He was married to Sarah Fisher Malona who was born, 1764, in New London,
Conn. We know nothing about this first marriage of Sarah Fisher-It is only
important because a D.A.R. came in on that line in Minnesota, giving Sarah
Fisher's name as Malona Alexander was the 3rd son of Ammiras: she descended
from him and that is where I found the date of Alexander's marriage.
The children of Ammiras and Sarah are as follows: Prudence; Jedediah; Henry
Ammiras; 9-19-1791-who married Luceba Dann; Alexander, born 1793, who
married Eleda Wilcox; Silas; Benjamin; Allen; Sophia; John; Joseph,
6-29-1803. Sarah died at the age of 16 and George died in infancy.
The date of the marriage of Ammiras Darrow and Sarah Fisher Malona is Jan.
6,1786
The first 4 children were born in New London, Conn. That would give your
Jedediah (2nd child) a birth date between 1788 and 1790. The family moved
to Boonville, Oneida Co.,N.Y. in 1795. Thsere on Aug. 8,1824, Ammiras died,
and his wife, Sarah, went west with son Jedediah and other children. They
went first to Mecca, Trumball Co.,Ohio.
My granddmother was the daughter of Henry A. Darrow and Luceba Dann.
Grandmother was born in Mecca but I have no date that would help you with
Jedediah.
Sarah Fisher Malona Darrow died in Winfield, Sauk Co.,Wis., on Dec. 6,1856;
and was buried in Greenwood Cemetary. My grandmother was with her when she
died. She also received a widow's pension until her death.
My proof is in a book "History of Reedsbur and The Upper Baraboo Valley" by
Merton Krug. (Address: Reedsburg,Wis.) The Family Bible also gives the list
of children.
Mr. Clarence Darrow was a first cousin of my grandmother.

I don't know when the above was written (no date) nor who it was written
to. I think Elnora Brown who owns the Octagon home Clarence was raised in
sent it to me when I first was checking on the Darrows. I assume she is a
graddaughter of Adelia, but I haven't checked it out. It seemed to me to be
nothing new, but I would like your ideas on it. Thanks, Molly.24
