Accrington
Ship: 1900 Tons
Captain: Christie
Surgeon Superintendent:
Sailed Plymouth June 18th 1863 - arrived Lyttelton September 5th 1863

The Accrington was a remarkably fine ship of 1900 tons. She had a flush deck of 280 feet in length and was specially fitted up for the conveyance of passengers. Nothing of note occured during the voyage except a continuance of gales and squally weather after leaving the Cape. The Accrington brought out 12 saloon passengers and 310 assisted immigrants. During the voyage 12 deaths occurred. This was the only passage made to New Zealand.

Arthur George OBORN:
Arthur George ((known as George)  Oborn, aged 25, came to New Zealand as a single man. His family for a number of generations had operated a butchery in High Street,  Wincanton, Somerset. After arriving in Christchurch George would have met up with his first cousin Thomas Hiller Green who would have by this time established T.H.Green & Co. (bacon curers) butchery business. In May 1868 George married Fanny Newman and they ran the butchery at Akaroa. In the late 1870's the family moved to Timaru where George continued as a butcher and Fanny set up one of the early "Birthing Homes" in Elizabeth Street.  George and Fanny are both buried in Timaru. Further information can be obtained from their great grandson, John Fisher.

JOLL family:
James Clymo Joll married Elizabeth Jane Delbridge just 12 days prior to sailing for New Zealand on the ship Accrington. He had married the boss's daughter having been indentured to John Delbridge of Camborne in Cornwall. James and Eliza subsequently had eight children, one of whom, Thomas, who married Emma Jane McCardell, was my grandfather. James, we believe, was a stonemason and plasterer who at one stage worked on the Lyttleton tunnel. I would love to hear from any of the relatives of the children of James and Eliza who can contact me, Tom Joll

LUSTY family:
29 year old Henry Lusty, his 26 year old wife Jane (nee Alderman) and their 4 year old son William John came to New Zealand aboard the Accrington that docked in Lyttleton in 1863. Henry was born in Frome on the eastern boarder of Somerset and Jane was from Clayhanger in Somerset. Henry moved on to NSW Australia as a labourer and died 1897, while Jane and William moved to Lambpton Quay, Wellington, where she worked as a streamstress. William went on to marry Elizabeth Slarks on September 16th 1876 and together they had seven
children. William was a carpender by trade and died on May 14th 1893
