EDE family: John Ede was born in Sussex, England in 1837. On April 7th April 1861 at Burhham he married Sarah or Sally Keeble born 1840. They lived at 15 Eccles Cottage in Aylseford in 1871. It is not know why the Edes migrated to New Zealand on the Atrato on the 10th Feb 1874. On the 2nd Feb 1875 eight months after their arrival John Ede was killed at work on the railways. The family went through some terrible loss after John died. |

BINSKIN
family: William BINSKIN married Sarah Palmer KITNEY in Aylesford, Kent on 28th November 1852. In 1874 after 3 of their children had died, they embarked on the "Atrato " in London on the 10th February 1874 with 9 of their remaining children. The ship was damaged or broke down and returned to Plymouth for repairs. She sailed again on the 6th April 1874 to arrive in Lyttleton on the 20th June 1874. As ballast on the Atrato a cottage was carried which belonged to the BINSKIN'S. It was assembled at Geraldine in the South Island for them to live in and was named Eccles Farm after Eccles Cottages where they had lived in Aylesford, Kent. The children that travelled with them were:- Martha Anne married Charles William GIMSON in Aylesford, Kent on 13th August 1870. William Frederick married Annie Maria VENNER 9th November 1877 in Timaru. They had 5 children born in NZ and after they migrated to NSW in 1884 had another 8 children. John Charles married Sarah DARKE [ DRAKE ] 1st August 1877 in Timaru. They had no children. Henry Thomas married Alice MARTIN 24th March 1874 en route to NZ at Plymouth they had 5 children born in NZ and after they migrated to NSW in 1884 another 8 children. Elizabeth Sarah married David OWERS 3rd November 1876 in Timaru. They produced 6 children. Mary Jane married James Duffis Brown HOWEY 17th March 1879 in Timaru. 6 children resulted from this marriage. Sarah married Walter Thomas SPURDEN 1881 Timaru. 8 children from this marriage and 1 prior to marriage. Alice married William CARSTON 1st March 1883 at Winchester. 10 children born Joseph traded in the Solomon Islands for many years after leaving NZ and in 1905 he married Unga a native girl [ He was 36 and she was 14 at the time of marriage ]. From this union 2 children were born but in 1909 while Joseph was away from " the Island of Dreams " his wife and 2 children plus several native workers were massacred by natives. In 1910 he married Florence E WHEATLEY and they had 3 children. Charles William GIMSON married Martha Ann KITNEY [ daughter of Sarah Palmer KITNEY ] in Aylesford, Kent on 13th August 1870 [ Martha's age on the marriage certificate was shown as 20 when in fact she was only 18 ]They left London on board the Atrato in 1874 travelling with the BINSKIN FAMILY. With them were two children born in Aylesford, Emily and Rose Ellen. Emily died shortly after arriving in New Zealand at age 1 year and 7 months.The family settled in Geraldine and Martha gave birth to 7 more children. They were:-Annie born in 1875 who married Hands Edward Percy STRAIN on the 29th November 1911.William born in 1877 who married Helen Bertha FORD on the 19th June 1912.Charles born in 1879.Alice born in 1880.Albert Henry born in 1885.Thomas Jesse born in 1888 who married Decima Elizabeth Hunsdon BARTRAM on the 11th August 1915.Edith Jane born in 1891.Rose Ellen was born on the 12th May 1871 at Aylesford, Kent and married Charles Albert OPIE on 25th December 1893 at Winchester and they had 5 children.Emily was born on the 12th September 1872 at Aylesford, Kent and died in Christchurch Cir. 30th June 1874.Many thanks to my New Zealand connection for much of this information.
