WHITE family:
James White was born in London 22 February 1817. He married Lucy WINSBURY 11 February 1841. He was a missionary and teacher; his diary for the years 1854-1855 is held in Alex. Turnbull Library.  On the voyage out, he acted as Schoolmaster and his wife Lucy as Matron in charge of the single women. There was apparently some disorder and lack of discipline on board, and an enquiry was held at Lyttelton. The report of the Inquiry blamed the Whites for the trouble, but they were given no opportunity to rebutt the complaints made. They immediately left Christchurch for Marlborough, where James White was appointed the first headmaster of the Beaver School, 1859; he also served as a layreader for the Church of the Good Shepherd in Wairau Valley. He died Blenheim 5 July 1907 aged 90, and was buried in the Wairau Valley Cemetery. His wife Lucy died 5 May 1898. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Nancy McLaughlin. Nancy says that she has much more information & would welcome inquiries.
