Barque: 700 tons
Captain: Colville
Surgeon Superintendent: J G Thornley
Departed Plymouth 21st November 1878 - Arrived Wellington 14th March 1879

The Hudson, an iron barque of 700 tons, made thirteen voyages to New Zealand. She was built in 1869 and belonged to the Shaw, Savill Line. The Hudson made good average passages and sailed to several New Zealand ports during her career. Itr was claimed at one time that she made the quickest New Zealand passage when sailing to Napier in 1875 with 204 immigrants - 84 days land-to-land. On this occasion she also landed 350 birds including Robins, Goldfinches and Chaffinches, Partridges and Larks. During one voyage (1897) she lost her Captain, Gasson, when he inexplicably jumped overboard. All efforts were made to rescue him but to no avail. Hudson was sold to France and it was under the French flag that she made her last trip to New Zealand.

Peter FINDLAY (1841-1932) and his wife Elizabeth Kinnear STEPHEN (1841-1917) were both born in Arbroath. Peter was a ship's carpenter and had been all round the world before he decided to bring his family out to New Zealand. He applied to the NZ Government under the then current immigration scheme and was granted an order for the free passage of his wife and three children. They duly arrived on the 'Hudson', landing at Wellington in March 1879. The family settled at Port Chalmers, where Peter was Foreman Shipwright at the Union Steamship Company's yards. Their children were Peter (1872-1947), marr. Margaret Arthur GILLIES;
Isabella Henderson (1874-1945), marr. William Beal DAWSON; Elizabeth Kinnear Stephen (born & died 1876); John Stephen (1877-1952), marr. Isabelle Ruth MASON; David (born at Port Chalmers on Christmas Day 1879 & died 1958), marr. Elizabeth Ellen BARCLAY (widow of Mr. WEDDERSPOON); Mary Jane (1881-1976) marr. William RUSSELL in San Francisco in 1918; and Elizabeth (1884-1970), who did not marry.

Thomas & Sarah PRATT left Yorkshire with their three daughters Sarah, Ruth & Hannah. With them was Maria STODDARD, a daughter from Sarah's first marriage. Following their arrival inWellington, they moved to the West Coast where Thomas PRATT became the first Methodist Minister on the Denniston gold fields.
