On reaching North Cape a course was steered for Cape Brett. That course was continued until 10 o'clock on Sunday night at which time it was altered with the intention of taking Wairarapa outside the Hen & Chickens group on the last leg of her voyage to Auckland. At this time, though, the ship was well outside her course by some 10 to 15 miles and the course alteration proved deadly.
