Dr Thomas AICKIN:
Dr Thomas Aickin of Somerville, Dundrum, Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin (by 1851), and later of Auckland, New Zealand He was born at Trim, County Meath, on September 14th 1816 and died at Auckland on May 1st 1897. He is buried in Avondale Cemetery. Thomas was educated at Drogheda between 1826 and 1831 and the following details his medical qualifications and activities; 1) TCD 1838 June 4 "age 23". LRCSI (midwifery) 1839. 2) Studied in Belfast and Vienna. 3) MD Berlin 1842. 4) FRCSI January 1st 1844. 5) Practising in Marlborough Street, Dublin, 1848-49. 6) Lecturer in medicine at Apothecaries' Hall, Dublin. 7) Published "A thesis on gout" and wrote medical articles.  He is assumed to be the Thomas Aickin who published "Observations upon the nature and treatment of Cholera" in 1854. Thomas and his family emigrated to New Zealand on July 11th 1859 as medical officer on the clipper Mermaid, arriving in Auckland on October 19th 1859.  Thomas farmed and practised medicine at Avondale in Auckland. He was appointed the Medical Officer of Auckland the Provincial Lunatic Asylum on November 23rd 1869 at a salary of �250 p.a. and was listed as a licensed medical practitioner, New Zealand in 1870 and a Superintendent of Asylum by 1886.  Thomas was married to Agnes Casement at Holywood in County   Down on December 11th 1845. Agnes was the eldest daughter of Hugh Casement, a ship- owner and  merchant of The Moat House, Holywood, and his first wife Agnes.  Agnes Aickin died in Auckland in 1881 or 1896 June 12th. Thomas Aickin was a grandson of Dr. James Patten, the Surgeon on Cook's second voyage on the "Resolution" and anecdote has it that Patten's glowing account of the NZ climate influenced Aickin's decision to emigrate.
