Otago

Otago
Ship: 993 tons
Captain: Stuart
Surgeon Superintendent:

Sailed Glasgow 15th July 1873 - arrived Otago 11th October 1873

The Otago and James Nicol Fleming, two sister ships, were built in 1869 by Duncan, of Glasgow, for patrick Henderson, to carry immigrants for the New Zealand Government to Dunedin. When Henderson amalgamated with the Shaw, Savill Company the Otago sailed under that firm's house flag, and she was painted with ports along the side, a style adopted in all Shaw Savill Company boats. The Otago was a vessel of 993 tons, fitted up especially for the comfort of passengers. Like the James Nicol Fleming, she made consistent runs out and home, and most of the passages were below the average. The Otago in 1887 came out rigged as a barque in Command of Captain Norman. Subsequently the ship was sold to a Portuguese firm and renamed Ermilla. She was torpedoed and sunk during the late war.

MCMILLAN family:
The McMillan's were from Campsie in Scotland. They arrived in New Zealand on board this sailing of the Otago and  originally settled in Oamaru. They then moved to Palmerston North where one of their daughters, Isabella Forrester Mcmillan (my Grandmother) met and married my Grandfather Carl Julius Just. The McMillans then moved to Mata, just south of Whangarei, to take up farming. Carl and Isabella moved to Warkworth to work at the Cement Works and then on to Whangarei when the works shifted to Portland.
