HEMPSEED family:
John Hempseed was from
Dunfermline, Fife, son of James and Catharine Hempseed. He travelled to Australia sometime after early 1851. In 1853 he married Charlotte Thompson in Sydney. Charlotte had travelled to Australia as an assisted passenger on board the Duchess of Northumberland, arriving at Moreton Bay (Brisbane) on 4th Feb 1851. She came from Belfast in Ireland. Her parents were John and Charlotte Thompson. Charlotte was 27 years old then, which means she was actually nearer 29 or 30 when the couple moved on to NZ. With them was 9m old daughter, Catharine. John must have been an unassisted migrant, or he had made enough money while in Australia to buy his land outright when he settled in New Zealand. From the earliest mention of John on the Rangitikei electoral roll it is stated that he held freehold land. They settled to farm in Turakina in 1856. In NZ they had another six daughters, Jane, (Susan, who died as an infant,) Fanny, Maria, Euphemia and Marion. The girls married August Poppe (Catharine,) Peter Brown (Jane,) Donald McLean (Fanny,) Alex Perry (Maria,) John Calman (Euphemia,) and James Gair (Marion.) Charlotte died in 1893 and John in 1909. They are both buried in the Turakina Cemetery. They were my g-g-grandparents. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Gael McEwing.
