Waimate
Ship: 1123 tons
Captain: R Peek
Surgeon Superintendent:
Sailed London 4th September 1875 - arrived Otago 3rd December 1875

A vessel that was very well known in the New Zealand trade - more so in the South than in Auckland to which port she made three trips - was the new Zealand Shipping Company's ship Waimate, 1123 tons, which held the record for the fastest passage, London to Lyttelton, during the 30 from years 1870 to 1900. She was built by Mrssers J Blumer and Co., Sunderland. In all the Waimate made 22 voyages to New Zealand; three to Auckland, ten to Lyttelton, eight to Dunedin and one to Wellington.

NAYLOR family:
George NAYLOR with his wife Elizabeth (nee STUBBS), left London on the 4th September 1875 on board the "Waimate," and arrived in the port of Otago on the 3rd Dec. 1875. With them on the journey, were  their four children, Joseph (9) Rachael (7) Benjamin (2) and Maria L. (7 mths.) Their children were to grow to number eleven. George was born in Sothwell, Nottinghamshire, England on the 16 Sep 1840 and  married Elizabeth STUBBS (b.1846) in Barnard Castle, Durham. Apparently, George was sponsored by his brother Benjamin who settled in New Zealand a few years beforehand and who was a shop owner at Clyde. The NAYLOR's settled in a Central Otago town named "Blacks" which is now the township of Ophir. He set up business as a butcher at Matakanui which was formally known as "Tinkers." He also owned land there on which he fattened beef, mutton & pork which supplied his butchers shops at Matakanui & Blacks. George and Elizabeth are both buried at the Drybread Cemetery which is abt. 6km from Matakanui.
