"An ancestor of mine may add to youroverall knowledge. Please advise if my have any further data on his descendents.

1st Fleet Marine 23rd Company on "Sirius". See Mollie Gillen "The Founders". From "The Founders of Australia"; "James Williams was a Private Marine 23rd (Portsmouth) company, He joined 'Sirius" as part of the ship's compliment on 24 February 1787.

He joined the Marine Corps on 16 March 1872 and served in the East Indies in 1783-85.

From Port Jackson on 2 October 1788 he was sent to Norfolk Island by "Golden Grove", having made a will to William Stanley on 30 August.

At Norfolk Island on 26 April 1789 Williams received 24 lashes after a quarrel with a fellow Marine (12 for the quarrel and 12 for fighting in the hut of a convict.)

He returned to Port Jackson by "Supply" on 12 February 1791 and in March was discharged from the ships books to the Port Jackson detachment,, RNSW Regiment (Rum Corps)

Deciding to become a settler, he returned to Norfolk Island by "Atlantic" on 26 October 1791 and was given 60 acres on the left of Cascade Road, Phillipsberg, selling grain to the stores from 1792. It has been established this grant was never gazetted.

He left the island in September 1792 by "Atlantic" and joined the NSW Corps. He was back at Norfolk Island in 1793, arriving by "Kitty" in February.

He was transferred back to Sydney at the end of 1794 and discharged from the company of George Johnson in October 1799. Williams transferred to the Invalid (later Veteran) Company in 1810. By September 1808 he had served 26 years 234 days; he was then aged 48 years and six months.

Born at Rixham (Wrexham) Denbligh, Wales, he was a blacksmith, 5ft 8 ins tall, with a long dark complexioned face, black hair and hazel eyes.

In 1806 Williams was living with Rachael Watkins (Neptune 1790) who in that year was recorded with one son and three daughters; Susannah (b1792), Ann (b1794) and Michael (b c1802). She was sent to Norfolk Island in August 1790 and returned to Port Jackson after 1796. The date at which her relationship commenced with Willaims is uncertain.

He was on guard duty at South Head when he died on 16 March 1820. His burial was registered at St Phillip's Sydney and possibly died or was buried at Concord, age given as 70.

His wife and several of her children later worked for the manufacturer Simeon Lord at Botany where Rachael died on 10 February 1840, aged about 80.

"Posted by : Judith McIntosh
Date August 21, 1999

Leonard is my GGG Grandfather I believe and I am particularly looking for information relating to him or his family. He first appeared when he married firstly a Janet Martin on 4 April 1786 at Lethendy and Kinloch, Perthshire, Scotland. They appeared to have 4 children all christened at Lethendy and Kinloch on the following dates: Isobel - 10 Dec 1784; John - 24 March 1787; James - 19 June 1789; and Margaret 19 November 1791.

There was then another marriage of a Leonard McIntosh in the same church to an Elizabeth MacDonald on 14 July 1793. The issue of this marrriage are also christened at Lethendy and Kinloch, Perth and are janet - 14 Sept 1794; Anne - 5 March 1797; Donald - 17 March 1799; Helen - 27 Sept 1801;
Peter (my direct ascendant) 4 Dec 1803; Marjory - 13 April 1806; Laurence - 18 April 1808. This information is from the LDS IGI files.

Subsequent to this Peter Campbell McIntosh then came to Australia on the Lady Kennaway departing Leith Roads wharf in April 1838 with his wife, Margaret Johnston and children. Has anyone heard of any of these people. Please contact me. There appear to be no other Leonard McIntosh' in the LDS files for that period so I believe the same Leonard married both women. "

"I have come to an end on my Owen line. My ggg grandfather was William David Owen born 1810 in Paddington, London. To my knowledge his father was William David Morgan Owen, born 1784, and mother Elizabeth Taylor, born 1788. I have no other information on this line, and was wondering if anybody has continuing information on this family. I would appreciate any help!"

{S0575}. Message Board (ancestry.com) : Australian Family of McKinnon, Donald, Alexander, Low, John Creswick & McLauchlin. http://boards.ancestry.com.au/surnames.mckinnon/991/mb.ashx.

If anyone can add to the story that I've pieced together as per below - please do!!
Elizabeth Low married Alexander Alexander in Dundee Scotland in 1829.
They had Alexander, Agnes, Betsy & 2 males who predeceased their mother.
She then married Laurence Donald in 1847 in St Andrews Scotland and had Wilhelmina & John.
Wilhelmina married John McKinnon in Shotts Scotland in 1872 & had a son John.
Elizabeth seperated from Laurence & headed to Australia c1874 - probably with Wilhelmina & William as their next child Alexander was born in 1875 in Sydney Aust.
Elizabeth's son Alexander & his family came to Aust in 1876 & it is possible that the other 2 daughters & ?families came as well.
Elizabeth died in 1888 - aged 81yrs.
Wilhelmina remarried in 1890 to Rees John and had 2 sons.
In 1920s, the close family were made up of Mckinnon, Creswick, McLaughlin & John and many of the children have the middle name of Low, Donald & Alexander.

"The dreadful suffering of the soldiers in inadequate and overcrowded hospitals was brought to the attention of the British public by Mr Burdett-Coutts, who was instrumental in having a royal commission appointed to report on the care of sick and wounded in South Africa. In May 1900 he had visited Maitland Hospital near Cape Town where he found twenty-six year old Michael Cummins of the Australian Horse. This soldier had fallen victim to enteric at Bloemfontein and was sent down to Wynberg and then on to Maitland. Here Burdett-Coutts found him in the care of an army sergeant, “not a trained sergeant of the R.A.M.C., but an untrained man, himself recovering from enteric”. Cummings was a young farmer from Michelago who had come to South Africa with his regiment's first contingent. This unfortunate soldier died on 27 June. His suffering was too typical of that endured by many soldiers in South Africa."
