Boydton Plank Road and Hatcher's Run began.
First Division (including 91st) was in advance on morning. met enemy after about 4 miles. Second Brigade was formed in two lines in woods on left of road, with 188th NY and 91st PA in first line. Skirmishers from 91st were in front. Brigade advanced under lively fire until about 100-200 yards from Confederate works, reaching slashed woods and sharp fire. Established line there and threw up temporary entrenchments. Casualties include:

Second Brigade threw back Confederate advance in morning. Corps retreated during forenoon, with third brigade covering. First Division returned to former camp near Squirrel Level Road.
