William Pritchett is an interesting case. After enlisting, he never reported. His parents attempted to convince lt Closson that he couldn't serve because of eye problems. They later offered someone as a substitute, whom capt Sellers accepted, without authority. He was later arrested as a deserter. I don't know what happened after that. [see letter, Gregory to Thomas, 21 November 1863]
The 91st caught a deserter on Clinton Street in the 13th ward of Philadelphia on 28 December 1861 [see 'The deserters', Philadelphia Inquirer 30 December 1861, page 8].
William Cooper (K) was apparently charged with desertion. Gregory wrote a letter on 28 June 1864 explaining that wounds he received at Chancellorsville kept him away from the regiment for nearly a year, left him in the surgeon's care when he returned, and required him to be returned to the hospital. Gregory claimed Cooper's conduct led him to believe that Cooper's wife's statement is true, and he supported her petition to have the charge of desertion removed. [letter, Gregory to Breck, 28 June 1864]
The 91st received a letter on 13 Aug 63 about someone supposed to be a deserter.
In Sellers' report of 16 Sep 64, 2 men had been gained from desertion.
At least some people were transfered into the regiment as deserters [letter, Sellers, 18 October 1864].
5 privates were declared deserters on 27 Feb 1863: Brown (C) (either Andrew Brown or Conrad Brown), Charles Coe (C) (deserted 31 Jan 63), Thomas Ryan (D), Michael Gallagher (D) (returned 8 Mar 63), and Stewart (D) (either George Stewart or Robert Stewart). One deserter in co.E returned on 14 Sep 64.
Henry Muckafuse (A) was transferred to the 108th PA (11th PA Cavalry), having deserted from the cavalry.
number of deserters
Bates' roster lists 265 men as deserters; these include only those whose final status was "deserter". Also, not all men whose final status was "deserter" are listed as deserters in Bates; some, for example, are listed as not on the muster-out roll.
The company E list of deserters lists 27 deserters. Seven (7) of them were apprehended; four (4) returned under the president's proclamation; and three (3) returned (without any further explanation). The other thirteen (13) apparently did not return.
If this is representative, we should expect to find another 250 or more deserters in the regiment, who returned (voluntarily or after having been captured).
penalty for desertion
Soldiers who returned under the presidential proclamation lost all pay for the time of their absence, were reduced to private if they were non-commissioned officers, and had their term extended to cover the time they had been absent. [Note: the proclamation says the loss of pay should be the only penalty. Why were they demoted?]
Some other soldiers were court-martialed, and some not.
