91st PA--Grand army of the republic

91st PA--Grand Army of the Republic

Miscellaneous

Vera Fennell, Peter Abbott's granddaughter, served as national president of the GAR, and as president of the Pennsylvania Department of the GAR.

Samuel S Conrad, son of Samuel Conrad (E), was a messenger for the GAR in 1880, when he was 14 years old.

John Schwartz (K) is buried in the "South Side GAR Cemetery", in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Corporal Skelly Post number 9, Gettysburg, Adams Cty, Pennsylvania, successfully recommended granting a pension to Francis Breighner.

Jerome Small was not a member of the GAR.

John Somerville died at the GAR Home at 65th and Vine Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (his residence).

E D Baker Post, number 8, Pennsylvania
In May 1873, many men were expected on Decoration Day with the ED Baker Post.
At least in 1889, the Post Hall was at Broad Street and Columbia Avenue ('A man twice dead'. Weekly Register-Call (Central City CO), 15 February 1889 (issue 35), column F).
See 'Indignant G.A.R. men' (Philadelphia Inquirer 31 December 1892, page 1) and 'Baker Post's affairs' (Philadelphia Inquirer 1 January 1893 page 7)
for the number of members in June 1893, see 'Baker Post services', Philadelphia Inquirer 1 June 1893, page 7
They had one of the 91st's battle flags, which was destroyed in a fire in 1889 ('The Grand Army', National Tribune, 21 March 1889, page 6)

Members

I have assumed that men belonged to a GAR post if the members of the post were invited to attend their funeral.
See the SUVCW's Grand Army of the Republic Records Project for a list of known GAR posts.
