I Brigadier General Andrew Porter is announced as Provost Marshall General of the Army Of the Potomac and will Be obeyed and Respected accordingly

II A Provost Marshal for each Division will Be appointed By its Commander. [words appear to be missing; perhaps "He will obey"] the Division Commander in all Matters affecting interior Police. But will Be Responsible to the Provost Marshall General and Be guided By such instructions as he may from time to time give a sufficient guard will Be Detailed By the Division Commander for Duty under the Orders Of the Provost Marshall

III A Local Provost Marshall for a City Or Village will when necessary Be appointed By the Commanding Officer or By these head Quarters

IV For Brigaders [sic] and Detachments a Deputy Provost Marshall May, when necessary, Be appointed By the Division Commander

V The Duties Of the Provost Marshall General and Local relate to the General Police Of the army, and embrace the following subjects.
Suppression Of Marauding and Deppredations [sic] and Of all Brawls and Disturbances Preservation Of good Order and suppression Of Drunkenness Beyond the Limmits [sic] Of the Camps Prevention of Straggling On the March

Complaints Of Citizens as to the Conduct Of the soldiers

VI The Provost Marshall General and Locals will notify the Regimental Commanders Concerned of all arrests Of soldiers Made under their Orders and will Cause the Men to Be Delivered with a Coppy [sic] Of the Charges against them to their Propper [sic] Officers

VII They will see that the Orders Respecting Passes to Officers and Men absent from their Camps are enforced all Passes will Be taken up By the Guards at their expiration Passes so taken will Be turned Over Daily to the Provost Marshall Of the Division to which the Guard Belongs who will Cause them to Be examined and all forged Passes Or Passes Granted By impropper [sic] authority Or for unotherorised [sic] Periods to Be reported to the Division Commander

VIII All Deserters from the enimy [sic], and Other Persons Comeing [sic] within Our Lines will Be taken to the Provost Marshall Of the Nearest Division who will examine him in Presence Of the Division Commander Or any Officer Of his staff Designated for the Purpose and Communicate the Result and the information attained to the Provost Marshall General in important Cases the Deserter Or Other Person will Be sent to the Provost Marshall General with the Report

IX All Prisoners Captured from the enimy [sic] will Be turned Over to the Provost Marshall Of Division who Will Send them at the earliest Posible [sic] Moment with Complete Discription [sic] List and information as to whare [sic] when and how they were Captured to the Provost Marshall General

X All safe Guards Granted at these head Quarters will be Countersighned [sic] By the Provost Marshall General Persons found violating safe Guards will Be instantly arrested By the Provost Marshall.

XI Passes to Citizens within the Lines and for Purposes Of trade May Be Granted By the Provost Marshall General and Locals who will Be Guided strictly By the instructions heretofore Given By these head Quarters upon the subject

XII The Provost Martials [sic] will investigate all Complaints Of Citizens in Regard to the Conduct Of the troops and will Report the facts in the Case to the Division Commander By

General Order No 18

I The Commissioned officers will assemble at the Regimental or detachment Head Quarters for recitation in Tactities [sic] and regulations to the Colonel or Commanding daily at two O clock P.M.

II There will two [sic] daily drills of one hour and a half each Consisting of that portion of the Tactics which Consitute[d] the subject matter of the last recitation. one of the daily drills Shall be in the "School of the Company" and the other in the "School of the Batallion [sic].

III The non commissioned officers will assemble daily at nine O Clock A.M. for recitation in Tactics to the Adjutant

IV No man will be excused from duty unless excused by the Surgeon at Sick Call except by written request of the Captain of his Company approved by the Commanding officer and those marked absent without leave will be reported and punished

V Charges will be prefered [sic] against officers who excuse men in violation of this order

VI A report will be made from these Head Quarters every Saturday Showing the pressence [sic] or absence and the proficiency of every officer at the recitations for the week just past

VII The Gaurds [sic] will be inspected at least twice a day or oftener [sic] if necessary by the Field officer of the day

VIII Officers Commanding detachments on duty in the City are requested to give Special and particular attention to the police of quarters and to the Condition of their men taking care to see that their arms accoutrements and clothing are in the neatest possible order. They will instruct their men in the salutes and see that they are properly made.

IX The deportment of Both officers and men towards civilians is required to be of the most Courteous and obliging character consistent with the rigid enforcement of this order.

X This order will be read at the Head Quarters of each Company for ten days Consecutive from the date of its receipt

I The discharge of fire arms in the vicinity of the Camp is strictly forbidden except for Arlarm [sic] as shall hereafter be ordered or in case of an attackt [sic] of the Enemy and it is hereby made the duty of all officers and gaurds [sic] to arrest any person or persons violating this order

II The Commanding officers of Companies and Gaurds [sic] are requested to enforce discipline and maintain strict order in their respective Commands. We come here to be Soldiers to that end we must bind our energies.

III All orders from these Head Quarters must be published at Company roll calls on the day of their reception if possible and their reciept [sic] acknowledged and a certificate of their having been so published must appear upon the morning reports of the following day

IV Commants [sic] of Companies will State on their morning report following the reciept [sic] of this order whether the Articles of War have been read to their respective Commands particular attention is Called to Art. 41 & 42 of Said Articles

I In obedience to Gen order from Brigade Head Quarters a School for the instruction of Commissioned officers will be established and for that purpose will assemble at Cols Head Quarters daily at 2 O clock P.M.

II Commanders of Companies will at once take measures to have their Commands supplied with numbers and letters. special attention is directed to Parag 115 Page 23 revised Regulations for the army

III The non Commissioned officers will assemble each [alter]nate day at 9 O clock A. M. for instruction and drill as usual.

IV The most flagrant neglect of Gaurd [sic] Duty preceptible [sic] to the most careless observer. Gaurds [sic] can be seen sitting on their posts. leaning upon their Guns and assuming the most unsoldierly attitude while on duty this must be Corrected at once and officers will be held responsible for the manner in which their men discharge their duty
It is the pride of every true soldier to know his duty and do it well while the indolent and Shiftless find it more Congenial to their feelings to spend their time in grumbling and complaining of their hard fate
