John was born about 1828/29, in Pennsylvania, to Philip Partenheimer and Mary Ann Preall.(1) He (along with three siblings) was baptised in the First Reformed Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 28 July 1833.(15)
Before enlisting, he was a clerk.(2). In 1859, he was living at 1545 Marshall, with his brother William.(3)
He was mustered in on 4 November 1861 as a sergeant, in company B of the 91st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, at Philadelphia.(4) He had a light complexion, was 5 foot 8 inches tall, and had blue eyes and dark hair. He was a salesman, and lived in Philadelphia.(5)
He was present in the October 1861 to February 1862 muster rolls. The March-April 1862 roll does not state whether he was present. On 2 May he was reduced to private. He was present on the May-June and July-August muster rolls. On the September-October roll, he was present, on daily duty at the Quartermaster Department. He was present on the November-December muster roll, and was promoted to regimental commissary sergeant on 25 December 1862.(6)
He was present as commissary sergeant on all the muster rolls in 1863. He was at the Battle of Gettysburg, as regimental commissary sergeant.(16)
He was reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia. On 31 December 1863, at Warrenton Junction, he mustered out. He owed the US $6.87 for clothing.(7) On 1 January 1864, he re-enlisted. He was again present as commissary sergeant on all the muster rolls in 1864.
On 1 January 1865, Sellers asked that he be discharged to allow him to accept a commission as Captain.(17) He was discharged on 3 January 1865, and promoted to captain of company B on 4 January 1865, having received a commission from the Governor of Pennsylvania.(18)
On 27 January 1865, he and other officers met near Petersburg Virginia and adopted a testimonial to Captain James Closson, who had died in November 1864, of wounds received in action.(14)
On 14 February he requested a fifteen-day leave of absence to visit home because of serious illness of wife, which must have been granted because he was absent with leave on the January-February muster roll. (I have no other evidence that he was ever married; the 1880 census, for example, records him as single.) His leave began on 16 February 1865, and expired on 3 March 1865.(20) He returned to duty on 4 March, and was present on the March-April muster roll. On 28 March 1865, he was ordered to turn over surplus ordnance & ordnance stores to Captain William Carpenter.(19) On the May-June roll, however, he was absent--under arrest in his quarters.(8)
He mustered out on 10 July 1865, with his company.(9)
On 13 July 1865, he certified that William McLaughlin (B) was killed on duty on 10 January 1862.(21)
From 1870 until his death, he lived at 1140 South Street.(10) His mother Mary Ann and sister Elizabeth were also living there, at least in 1880.(11) His occupation is described variously as notion store, trimmings, varieties, and dry goods. (Elizabeth ran the store after his death, apparently until about 1894.(12))
He died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 2 August 1887, of consumption, and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died at, or was buried from, 1140 South Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.(13)
