a story about him (San Diego Union 18 May 1932, page 10, transcribed from GenealogyBank) claims he served in the 91st, but Find a grave memorial 103994964 (created by Linda, added 22 Jan 2013, accessed 18 Oct 2013) includes a picture of his headstone, according to which he served in I 26 NY Infantry. The story follows:
'W. M. O'Farrell, 93, of 2445 Front street, San Diego, is campaigning to be elected junior vice commander of the G.A.R. department of California and Nevada.
This department is the one now holding its sixty-fifth encampment here.
O'Farrell also is a pioneer San Diegan, having lived here 45 years, and is the father of William V. O'Farrell, circulation manager of the Union-Tribune company.
'Veteran O'Farrell, of the 91st Pennsylvania infantry, was acting corporal in charge of the guard at headquarters during the battle of Antietam, the Confederates' first drive to capture Washington, D.C.
Guard duty was too tame for him, as the battle progressed, so he obtained permission to take two comrades and join the fray.
'"My fight finally became a duel with a rebel sharpshooter," said O'Farrell.
"He fired three shots at me, one of them just shaving my foot.
My third shot brought him down, and he tumbled from a high bank where he had been shielding himself behind a tree."'
