Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He was drafted from Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 February 1865 (1, 2, 3). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster (2). His service was credited to the Sixteenth Congressional District (2). He was a private, in company G (1, 12).

He received clothing worth $41.05 (2).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 3). He was a private, in company G (12).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (4). He was living with his wife Mary (4). He was a farm laborer, and owned $600 in real estate and $300 in personal property (4).

On 21 October 1879, he applied successfully for a pension (8, 11).

In 1880, he was living in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (5). He was living with his wife Mary (5). He was a farmer (5).

In 1890, he was living in Tyrone, Adams County, Pennsylvania (post office: Menallen) (3).

In 1900, he was living in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with his wife Mary (6). He was a farmer (6).

He died on Monday 29 April 1907 [or possible 22 April 1907?], at his home in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (9).

On 17 January 1907 [?], his widow, Mary B McCans, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 11).

In 1910, his widow, Mary, was living on Bull Valley Road, in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (7). She was living on her own income (7).
