John McCarty

Before the war

He was born in Cork, Ireland (5, 6). He was born in 1838/39 (5 (22 in 1861), 6 (22 in 1861)).

When he enlisted, he was a labo[rer] (5, 6).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 6 feet tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (5, 6).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 27 September 1861 (1, 5, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Casner (5, 6). He was mustered in as a private in company K, by Captain Dye (1, 5, 6, 10 [co. D A], 12-13 (co. K)).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (8).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist (2). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (3, 4).

He mustered out on 6 November 1864 when his term expired (1, 7). He was a private, in company K (10 [co. D/A], 12-13 (co.K)).

After the war

On 10 September 1869, his mother, Hannah McCarthy, successfully applied for a pension (9, 11).

On 17 July 1871, his father, Jeremiah McCarthy, successfully applied for a pension (9, 11).
