Before the war

He was born in 1839/40 (2 (25 in 1865), 3 (40 in 1880), 7 (30 in 1870), 8 (21 in 1860), 9 (3 in 1850)). He was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania (2). He may have been born to Robert McCleaf and Jane Hayes (10).

In 1850, he was living in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, with Jane McCleaf (presumably his mother) (9).

In 1860, he was living in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (8). He was a laborer (8). He was living with Barney Bigham, who was a hotel keeper (8).

When he enlisted, he was a miner (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, brown eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He also served with company C of the 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (4, 5, 6). He was mustered in in October 1862 (6). He was discharged on 28 July 1863 (6).

On 2 February 1864, he married Sarah Ellen Hoffman, in Emmitsburg, Maryland (10). She was born on 18 March 1847, in Green Mount, Pennsylvania (10, 12 [Mar 1845]). They had ten children (10, 12 [8 children, 6 living in 1900], 13 [10 children 6 living in 1910):

He was drafted (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 February 1865 (1, 2, 6). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster (2). His enlistment was credited to the sixteenth congressional district (2). He was a private in company A (1, 15, 16).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 6). He was a private, in company A (15, 16).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (7). He was a farmhand, and owned $500 in real estate and $150 in personal property (7). He was living with his wife Sarah, and three children: Mary A, Jane, and John C (born in October 1869) (7).

In 1880, he was living in Fredom Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (3). He was a farmer (3). He was living with his wife, Sarah E McCleaf, and five daughters: Alice McCleaf, Annie McCleaf, Josephene McCleaf, Lucy McCleaf, and Sarah McCleaf (3).

On 11 November 1885, he died, in Fairfield, [Adams County,] Pennsylvania (10 [11 Nov 85], 11 [11 Jan 85]). He was buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Fairfield, [Adams County,] Pennsylvania (10, 11).

On 7 October 1889, Sarah E McCleaf, his widow, applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 5).

In 1890, his widow, Sarah E McCleaf, was living in Fairfield, Adams County, Pennsylvania (6).

On 8 April 1890, his widow, Sarah, married John F Peters, in Gettysburg, [Adams County,] Pennsylvania (10, 12, 13 [15 years in 1910]). He was born on 8 November 1841, in Fairfield, [Adams County,] Pennsylvania (10).

On 6 September [?] 1896, a minor dependent, Sarah E Peters, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 5).

In 1900, his widow, Sarah E Peters, was living in Fairfield Borough, Adams County, Pennsylvania (12). She was living with her second husband, John F Peters, and her children Oliver and Margaret Peters (12).

In 1910, his widow, Sarah E Peters, was living in Fairfield Borough, Adams County, Pennsylvania (13). She was living with her second husband, John F Peters, her daughter Maggie Alison, and Maggie's family (13).

In 1920, his widow, Sara E Peters, was living in Fairfield Borough, Adams County, Pennsylvania (14). She was living with her second husband, John F Peters, her daughter Margaret Allison, and Margaret's family (14).

On 29 July 1922, John F Peters died, in Fairfield, [Adams County,] Pennsylvania (10). He was buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Fairfield, [Adams County,] Pennsylvania (10).

On 23 October 1929, his widow Sarah Peters, died, in Fairfield, [Adams County,] Pennsylvania (10). She was buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Fairfield, [Adams County,] Pennsylvania (10).
