He was born in 1837/38 (2 (26 in 1863), 6 (23 in 1861)). He was born in Wilmington, Delaware (2, 6 [Philadelphia]).
When he enlisted, he was a boatman, and was living in Philadelphia (2, 6).
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (2, 6 [5'10", sandy complexion, gray eyes, brown hair]).
He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private in company E on 20 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 6, 7).
He re-enlisted for three years, as a veteran volunteer, at Bealton, Virginia, on 24 December 1863 (1, 2, 6). He was enlisted by Lieutenant Carpenter, and mustered into service by Lieutenant Swann (this may relate to his original enlistment) (2).
On 6 March 1864, he was detailed to report to Lieutenant Rittenhouse of the 5th US Artillery, at Bristow (3). He was to be borne on the rolls as on detached service (3, 5). He was detailed by General Sykes with Battery D of the 5th US Artillery (2, 5). He was still there in September (?) 1864 (5).
On 19 November 1864, he was reassigned, detailed to temporary duty in the quartermaster department of the artillery brigade (4).
He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 6). He was a private, in company E (7).
